SN#13103 Sun Offers Temporary Capacity on Demand for Sun Fire[TM] ServersSYSTEM NEWS FOR SUN USERS
Vol 76 Issue 1 2004-06-01 Article 13103 from section "Servers"
Sun now features enhancements to its Capacity on Demand (COD) 2.0
offering that allow users of the Sun Fire[TM] 3800, 4800 and 6800
servers, the Sun Fire[TM] 12K and 15K servers and the Sun Fire[TM]
E4900 and E6900 servers to purchase Right-to-Use licenses for CPUs
and/or memory on COD Uniboards on a temporary basis. In addition,
all COD 2.0 customers can use "headroom" CPUs as hot spares for
non-COD CPUs.
Customers purchasing temporary COD RTUs will be able to obtain
incremental computing power by activating unlicensed CPUs on COD
2.0 boards on a temporary basis. This will enable customers to
reduce cost by meeting temporary demand without purchasing
permanent RTUs and to increase server availability by utilizing Hot
Sparing capabilities.
Temporary COD extends through the life of the server it is licensed
for, unlike the procurement solution used with asset-less
computing, which typically extends for only 36 months. The maximum
time a customer can have a specific T-COD license is six months,
which is typically the maximum life of the purchase order used to
buy it.
If a customer purchases a temporary license for six consecutive
months, Sun will issue a permanent license to ...
