Have a downloaded older 250 page PDF document in which all the 
capital "Y"'s and "$" signs are just missing (just not there; blank 
spaces instead).  No chance of getting back to original source.  
Any chance of repairing this?

(Could be cross-platform problem; being viewed on Mac, probably
originally created on some MS system.  Or, doc was probably created
by scanning and OCR-ing, so maybe the scanner had a glitch on
these characters.)

Try Iceni Gemini. You may be able to re-map the font, extract the text 
to an RTF file with precise positioning, and then "print" the RTF to a 
new PDF.
