Free PDF-XChange Viewer installer: PUP.ToolbarDownloader

  • Follow

PDF-XChange Viewer has got great reviews as a PDF reader that can edit
PDF files. (It was either this or Foxit, and I thought I'd try this
first). I downloaded the installer from http://pdf-xchange-viewer.en.softonic.com/download.
However, MalwareBytes Free classifies this as
"PUP.ToolbarDownloader". Ugh, not what I want. A google search
doesn't find anything informative, at least not in English. This is
odd, because a real problem usually generates a significant number of
hits.

Has anyone else found this problem? Has anyone found this to *not* be
a problem? How bad *is* "PUP.ToolbarDownloader"? Some installers
don't even ask the user for permission to install toolbars (or ignore
it when the user refuses). From past experience, I know that I
certainly don't want that kind of situation.

I have a version dating from spring of 2010, v. 2.0 (Build 50.0). That came
accompanied by *no* such Toolbar.Downloader. On the other hand, my install
(for Win Vista) came from a ZIP archive, *at that time* nominally at
<http://www.docu-track.com/download/PDFXVwer.zip> , but actually at
<http://c1236872.cdn.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/PDFXVwer.zip> .

I have no idea whether those locations still exist, or offer what you want.

The Help|About data on my installation includes the following further info:

> Copyright © 2001-9 Tracker Software Products (Canada) Ltd
> 466 Trans Canada Highway, Duncan, BC. V9L 3R6. Canada.
> email: sales@docu-track.com

Further information, then, was to be had at:

Perhaps it is not a real problem. I use that viewer and I don't recall any
problem with a mandatory or silent toolbar installation. Overall, I think
it is a great viewer, but I dont think that its free version is much of an
editor.

tlvp, Matti,

Based on advice from another forum, I went directly to the
developer's site http://www.tracker-s...xchange-viewer. The download
did not trigger PUP.

Thanks.

Glad you found a clean version. Softonics is in the business to make money;
harvesting your clicks via a piece of PUP, PUS or MOPUS is their technique.

Cheers, and enjoy PDFXCview in peace, -- tlvp
