How not to bring up Adobe PDF files in Mozilla Firefox browser windows
Anyone know how to tell Firefox NOT to bring up the Adobe Acrobat
Reader or Adobe Acrobat Exchange in the Mozilla Firefox 1.0 browser
window?
All I want it to do is bring up the Adobe product in a SEPARATE (Adobe)
window when I click on a PDF link and for the Adobe product and window
to die when I close that window.
Currently, Firefox 1.0 on Windows XP SP2 brings up Adobe Acrobat Reader
and then leaves 30 Mbytes of Adobe plugin garbage in memory long after
all the browser windows are closed!
Not only does this virtually destroy the existing browser relevance,
but, it wastes memory.
I tried deleting the Mozilla Firefox 1.0 plugin directory contents.
I tried Firefox Tools->Extensions and I tried Firefox
Tools->Options->Web Features and I also tried Firefox
Tools->Options->Downloads->File Types->Plug-Ins (all to no avail).
Where is this exasperating setting in Firefox?

It is not in Firefox. It is in Acrobat Reader. "Edit - Preferences", select
Options. It is the first option - "Display PDF in Browser". (NB. I am
working from Reader 5.1)

Great information! I was wondering the same thing for months!
I can't stand the Adobe product stealing my browser window.
Your suggestion is very helpful.
However, I think most professionals recommend use of the Adobe Acrobat
Exchange PDF editor and not the tremendously less functional PDF
reader.
In Adobe Acrobat Standard 6.x, the corresponding setting appears to be
EDIT ===> PREFERENCES ===> INTERNET ===> WEB BROWSER OPTIONS
- Display PDF in Browser
- Check Browser Settings When Starting Acrobat
- Allow Fast Web View
- Allow Speculative Downloading in the Background
I have no idea what those last two are but I suspect they should all be
turned off (they are all turned on by default) for the proper viewing
experience.

For Adobe Reader 7.0:
Edit -> Preferences -> Internet -> uncheck 'Display PDF in Browser'.

Or, in Firefox go to Tools > Options > Downloads > Plug-Ins and disable
the Adobe plug-ins.

It's not in Firefox.
The Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Reader plugins DO NOT SHOW UP in Firefox.
You must disable from the Adobe product and NOT from Firefox!
