how to change a read only PDF file to make it readable?

  • Follow

Hi,

When I load certain PDF files into Acrobat and select the "Text Select Tool",
I can highlight portions of the text. When I right mouse click,
I get a popup menu that includes Copy. For other PDF files, I do the same
thing but now all the menu items in the popup are greyed out and I can no
longer cut and paste this text.

What is going on and how can I get around it?

Thanks,

Ted

Document creators (aka copyright holders) can set security options.
You can check this with File > Document Security or similar in
Acrobat.

If you want to be able to copy text, the polite thing to do is to ask
the document creator for an unprotected copy, and if they don't want
to, you could do worse than respect their wishes.

Thanks. I see what's happening. Is there a Perl module that can
access this kind of info and at least tell me what the Security level is?

The free demo of our PSP product can be used to query security
status information from a PDF. It's based on a C library, but
a Perl binding is also available.
