Line-drawing character alignment problem (AR6 bug?)

  • Follow

We're having trouble getting characters to line up horizontally using an
embedded line-drawing font. Under Acrobat Reader 5, the characters
line up perfectly on the screen at any scale; under 6, they do not. A
small example can be seen at www.jgrasp.org/tmp/csd.pdf . The
vertical stems of the two leftmost characters should always be aligned.

The characters are from a TrueType font that is hinted programmatically
(actually, they are entirely generated by TrueType hint code) so that they
are guaranteed to line up perfectly, which they do in almost any
application (any one that does a halfway decent job of rendering TrueType).

The pdf files are generated from MS Word. It seems that files generated
under an older version of Word or Distiller may not have the problem.

Is this a bug in AR6, or is there some Distiller setting or pdf flag that
can
fix this?
