beamer: bare text is greyed out

I have a set of beamer slides, where mysteriously, some text that is
written as just plain or bare text, outside of an itemize or other
enclosing context appears greyed out on the slides.

Environment: I'm using pdfeTeX, Version 3.141592-1.21a-2.2, with
beamer 2005/10/23 cvs version 3.06 on debian linux/stable, from the
tetex distribution

An example is the slide at
http://euclid.psych.yorku.ca/SCS/Gallery/Test/AARMS29-bad.jpg
produced from the following, where the figure caption "Ideas behind ..."
is greyed out.

\begin{frame}
   \frametitle{HE plots: Visualizing \mat{H} and \mat{E} (co) variation}

\begin{center}
   \includegraphics[width=.85\textwidth,clip]{fig/arcmanov1}
   \\ Ideas behind multivariate tests: (a) Data ellipses; (b) \H and \E
matrices
\end{center}

\begin{itemize*}
   \item \mat{H} ellipse: data ellipse for fitted values,
$\hat{\vec{y}}_{ij} =
   \bar{\vec{y}}_j$.
   \item \mat{E} ellipse:  data ellipse of residuals, $\hat{\vec{y}}_{ij} -
   \bar{\vec{y}}_j$.
\end{itemize*}
\end{frame}

There are many other examples where this occurs, even if I just have
some plain text ("Here you can see:") before an itemized list,

Here you can see:
\begin{itemize}
  \item{First thing}
  \item{Second thing}
\end{itemize}

but it seems *not* to occur if a color is specified somewhere in the
text.  E.g., the text appears properly if I use \black{}

\begin{center}
   \includegraphics[width=.85\textwidth,clip]{fig/arcmanov1}
   \\ \black{Ideas behind multivariate tests: (a) Data ellipses; (b) \H
and \E matrices}
\end{center}

or, on a different slide,

\begin{frame}
   \frametitle{Data Ellipses: Galton's data}
   \begin{center}
   \includegraphics[width=.9\textwidth,clip]{fig/galton-reg3}
   \\ Galton's data on Parent \& Child height: \blue{40\%}, \red{68\%}
and 95\% data ellipses
   \end{center}
\end{frame}

with the definitions

\newcommand*{\red}[1]{{\color{red}#1}}
\newcommand*{\blue}[1]{{\color{blue}#1}}
\newcommand*{\black}[1]{{\color{black}#1}}

I'd hate to have to go through it and wrap \black{} around all the
offending bits.

Can anyone suggest what is wrong?

-Michael

This is pretty old. The bug was fixed over a year and a half ago,
in beamer version 3.07.

The pdftex is also pretty old. Current stable version is
    TeX: 3.1415926
    pdfTeX: 1.40.9
with copies of 1.50beta in existence for several months.

Indeed; only texlive-2007, AFAIK, came with beamer 3.06 and
that way that version ended in various distributions. As texlive-2008
showed up only quite recently you can expect the older one to be
around for quite a while.

What is "text + text" supposed to do right now? It doesn't seem very useful to me. What about making "text + text" as an equivalent for "text || text"? Most strongly-typed programming languages do this. Text from required text box to read-only text box
Hello, I am fairly new to JavaScript and its use in Acrobat Professional. My situation is this: I have a form with a text box field which is required for the user to enter his/her name. I would like the required text box to display the name in all caps. I also need the user's name to appear in a read-only text box later in the form, which I would like to have the first letter of the user's first, middle initial, and last names to be capitalized. I would also like to have all required fields on the form highlighted in yellow, but the highlighting not printed. Lastly, I would like the...

Surrounding text with text
I was wondering if it was possible to surround a text body with text like so: +--------------+ |ABCDEFGHIJKLM | |H N| |A Main Body O| |L Text goes P| |B here Q| |-=+_ZYXWVUTSR | | | | | | | | | +--------------+ This seems far-fetched, but just curious.
