How to get rid of 'Font shape in size not available ...'?

Hi all!

We have a custom document class that always generates some font size
warnings:
+ LaTeX Font Warning: Font shape `U/msa/m/n' in size <40> not available
+ (Font) size <24.88> substituted on input line 41.

As far as I understand I can safely ignore these warning, but how to get
rid of them?

I have tried with \RequirePackage{fix-cm} but it doesn't seem to make
any difference.

The document class snippet looks like this:
[...]
   \begin{minipage}[b]{\textwidth}
   \ \vfill
   \begin{longtable}[b]{ll}
   \hspace{0.35\textwidth}\ &\vspace{1cm}\ \\

&\fontfamily{ptm}\fontseries{bx}\fontsize{40pt}{50pt}\selectfont\begin{minipage}{0.5\textwidth}\begin{flushleft}\@title\end{flushleft}\end{minipage}\\
   &\vspace{2cm}\ \\

&\fontseries{b}\fontsize{24.88pt}{35pt}\selectfont\begin{minipage}{0.5\textwidth}\begin{flushleft}\type
\\ \subsystem \end{flushleft}\end{minipage}\\
   &\vspace{1cm}\ \\
   &\large Revision \myrevision, \lastchangedmonth \ \lastchangedyear\\
   \end{longtable}
   \end{minipage}
   \newpage
[...]

-> This includes the title page for the document with \title in 40pt and
\type and \subsystem variables in 24.88pt. (The generated sizes appear
to be correct)

and the document I use looks like this:
   \documentclass[ngerman]{mydoku}
   \InitClass
   \usepackage{textcomp}
[...]
   \Title{Ein Titel}
   \Type{Dokumentationstyp}
   \Subsystem{Das Subsystem}
[...]
   \begin{document}
[...]
   \end{document}

cheers,
Martin

get rid of them by not requesting the fonts in sizes way beyond the
standard set.

as its name implies, fix-cm deals with cm fonts; msam isn't a cm font.

the latest version of the .fd files for the ams fonts actually behaves
the same way (i.e., allows scaling throughout the size range), so if you
were using texlive 2009, this would not be happening. (any earlier
distribution, such as texlive 2007, as distributed with my machine,
contains the archaic set of sizes, which stops at 24.88.)

note that it's not necessary for times, since that's _always_ been
totally scaleable.

you don't show anything that actually selecting msam in the section
that's at 40pt (nominal); is that in fact the case?

(if it is, i'm not sure i understand what's going on.)

Well 24.88pt instead of 40pt is quite a lot. I wouldn't ignore it.

fix-cm fix the cm font family, not the msa family.

> The document class snippet looks like this:

Snippets are evil. In general the vital informations are missing.

In a modern system there should be no substituation for this font. I
don't get your warning with this example.

\documentclass{article}
\begin{document}
{\fontsize{40pt}{50pt}\fontencoding{U}\fontfamily{msa}\selectfont
blub}
\end{document}

It uses as umsa.fd this version:

\ProvidesFile{umsa.fd}    [2009/06/22 v3.00 AMS symbols A]

and as font msam10.pfb.

As others have replied, ignoring these particular warnings (instead of
fixing them) may not be such a good idea. But to answer your
question, to get rid of such warnings, I have resorted to this:
\renewcommand{\fontsubfuzz}{\maxdimen}

and, even stronger (for "no bold typewriter in cm"):
\makeatletter\def\@font@warning#1{}\makeatother

Not sure if it'll really help, but FWIW.

Sorry. I should have added that the title in question is actually
generated in 40pt. If I change the 40pt in the snippet I provided to
30pt it gets generated as 30pt / 60pt as 60pt -- if I change it to
24.88pt the warning goes away.

I should also add that I basically clueless when it comes to LaTeX
intricacies, but the person who originally created the document class is
no longer available.

As far as I can see no msa fontfamily is used in the document class (ptm
seems to be the only one selected)

You message above speaks of the family: U/msa/m/n.

Well it would have been easier if you had compile my minimal
document which calls the font directly.

Compared to my umsa.fd ([2009/06/22 v3.00 AMS symbols A]) your
umsa.fd is quite outdated (and the rest of your packages too).

miktex 2.6. no longer offers automatic updates, so if you want a new
version of the amsfonts you will either have to install a newer
miktex or update the package manually.

Btw: I don't know if the font is actually used. Your font list at
the end of the log doesn't show msam10.pfb used by my system.

as i said before, you've an out-of-date set of ams symbol macros. i
presume the current macros are available if you update your miktex.

> I should also add that I basically clueless when it comes to LaTeX

however, even for those who understand the thing, 1300+ lines of post
are a bit much to digest. i recommend reading
  http://www.tex.ac.uk/cgi-bin/texfaq2html?label=minxampl
(or equivalent) before you next post an example of your tex writing.

(amusingly, what you _did_ post didn't, as far as i could tell, show the
offending line in your document.)

i deduce that your obscenely large title has maths in it. every time
you open a maths group, latex checks it has maths fonts set up properly,
and it's at that point that it spots the problem with ms[ab]m.

if you're not intending to use those symbols in your title, you can
simply ignore the error. however, that leaves a problem to come and
bite you if you change your mind.

better, therefore, to get an up-to-date ams symbol package (it's part of
the amsfonts distribution).

Well I can always try to update MikTeX to the newest version.

Well - Ulrike Fischer said snippets are evil, so I sent the whole thing. :-)

The offending line isn't in the document, it's to do with the document
class. The warnings go away if I change the font sizes in the doc class.

No. It does not have maths in it.
The warnings will be generated with the "\Title{Our Title}" I posted and
with this document class.

Thanks for all pointers so far.

I'm happy to report having solved the problem.
The problematic code quote follows:

The problem was that \selectfont followed by \begin{minipage} does not
work and was/is indeed completely pointless as the minipage is all there
is in this table cell. (It appears that the minipage group will reset
the font or whatever.)

Fixing this was achieved by moving the \fontfamily...\selectfont
after/into \begin{minipage} and the the font warnings did go away.
(Though the appearance of the final PDF was *exactly* the same
regardless of where the font selection happened to be.)

Font sizes in 'rich text' control
I have run into a problem with the new rich text control in Access 2007. It seems that you can only choose from 6 preset font sizes when entering or editing text. The sizes are 8,10,12,14,18,24,36, which as I understand it, corresponds to Font Size=1 through Font Size = 6 in HTML. Is there any way around this. I have a need to display the data at 46pt, and also to make fine discriminations in font size depending on the data displayed. Is there some other way to tell HTML to display a font size? Is there some way to overcome these limits in Access 2007? Thanks in advance for your h...

Why doesn't input code return 'plants' as in 'Getting Started with Beautiful Soup' text (on page 30) ?
Dear Programmers, Thank you for your advice regarding giving the console a current address in the code for it to access the html file. The console seems to accept the code to that extent, but when I input the two lines of code intended to access the location of a required word, the console rejects it re : AttributeError:'NoneType' object has no attribute 'li' However the document 'EcologicalPyramid.html' does contain the words 'li' and 'ul', in its text. I am not sure as to how the input is arranged to output 'plants' which is also i...

How do I get rid of Mail's 'suggestions'
Actually, not me, my mother. She once typed my email address wrongly into Mail's 'To' field. Now, if she starts to type my address in that field (I'm trying to get her to use the address book instead), the programme brings up a list of everything she's ever typed there starting with the letter 'S', with the incorrect address at the top of the list. She forgets that this address is wrong, selects it, and wonders why her email bounces. Where are these 'suggestions' stored? Is there a preference I can disable or a file a can trash to get rid of them, or, at le...

Controlling the text in plot 'xyz' title 'text'
Hi Can somebody help me out? I want to change the text fonts which appear in keys for every line, in command: plot "file" title "xyz" How to use desired font size for xyz above? Thanks -- Your's truly Masroor Bangesh help title: gnuplot> help title The `set title` command produces a plot title that is centered at the top of the plot. `set title` is a special case of `set label`. Syntax: set title {"<title-text>"} {offset <offset>} {"<font>{,<size>}"} {{textcolor | tc} {lt <line_type> | default}} {{no}enhanced} show title If <offset> is specified the title is moved by the given offset where <offset> is specified by either x,y or x,y,z, and may be preceded by `first`, `second`, `graph`, `screen`, or `character` to select the coordinate system. See `coordinates` for details. By default, the `character` coordinate system is used. For example, "`set title 0,-1`" will change only the y offset of the title, moving the title down by roughly the height of one character. <font> is used to specify the font with which the title is to be written; the units of the font <size> depend upon which terminal is used. `textcolor lt <n>` sets the text color to that of line type <n>. `noenhanced` requests that the title not be processed by the enhanced text mode parser, even if...

getting rid of '{}'
Hello, I am using the 'list' data structure to build up a SIP INVITE message. When I do that, the final message that is built has lotsa '{' braces in it. How do I get rid of them? A workaround could be to use 'lreplace', but it needs me to enter the exact position/index value of the braces (which I can get using lsearch). I just wanted to know if there is a cleaner solution. Best Regards, Anuj Mistry. 42 % string map {\{ "" \} ""} "{this is {an example {of nested braces}}}" this is an example of nested braces anuj wrote: > Hello,...
