local texmf on portable (flash) drive

  • Follow

I'm moving between Windows computers and need to use
my localtexmf with other people's MiKTeX installations.
If I have the localtexmf on my flash drive. What is the
best/easiest way to add it temporarily to the MiKTeX
search path at the Windows (not DOS) level, and is that
enough to be able to use it?

If it was just a matter of a class file, I would be
willing to provide the full path to \documentclass,
but there are some class option files as well, and
they are not found with that approach.

Thanks,
Alan Isaac

Plug the drive in; add your directory to the roots (MiKTeX
Maintenance, options); update everything.

Alternatively, MiKTeX now allows you to install the whole thing on a
portable drive: "A beta release of MiKTeX Portable is now available.
The portable edition allows you to carry MiKTeX on a portable storage
device for use on any Windows computer. By using the portable edition
you leave no traces on the host computer and you do not need
administrator privileges."

1. Under MiKTeX/Maintenance I do not see "options",
but I see that I can do this under Settings.

2. How will MiKTeX behave once I remove the flash drive
(if I make this change)? I suppose you will say that
before I do that, I can undo the setting change ... ?

Given that it's Windows, it will probably crash or hang or something
unless you reset it the way it was before pulling out the USB stick.

A TeX that can be used with a user's personal files from a USB stick has
long been a requirement, especially from places like mine, where the
student public lab PCs are locked down tight. MIKTeX's Portable solution
sounds like the right idea.
