MikTex 2.9 - problem installing packages on the fly (after initial update formats problem)

I've been using MikTex on a Windows 7 machine for a while without any probl=
ems; it has always successfully installed packages on the fly with <Random =
package repository> specified. After a re-install of Windows 7, I've had to=
 re-install MikTex (version 2.9.5721). (N.B. I've tried both the 32 bit and=
 64 bit versions.)

Here's the test file I typeset (with pdfLatex+MakeIndex+BibTex):
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
\documentclass[12pt]{article}
\begin{document}
test doc
\end{document}
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

MikTex returned the following error:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
You may want to visit the MiKTeX project page (http://miktex.org), if you
need help.

Sorry, but C:\Program Files (x86)\MiKTeX 2.9\miktex\bin\texify.exe did not =
succeed.

The log file hopefully contains the information to get MiKTeX going again:

  C:/Users/Rob/AppData/Local/MiKTeX/2.9/miktex/log/texify.log

You may want to visit the MiKTeX project page (http://miktex.org), if you
need help.

This was the entry in texify.log:

After searching the internet I tried the following (blindly, because I have=
 no idea what these actions do):
1. In MikTex Package Manager (Admin) I selected: Repository | Synchronise. =

   After this the same error occurred.
2. In MikTex Settings (Admin) I selected: General | Update Formats. This
   appeared to solve the problem, because I then successfully typeset the=
=20
   document.

I then added "\usepackage{microtype}" to the test file and tried to typeset=
 it. In the "Package Installation" dialog that popped up, I clicked "Instal=
l" with "<Random package repository>" selected. I then got the error:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

In MikTex Settings (Admin) I then tried: General | Refresh FNDB. However, t=
his just took me back to the original error.

Finally, I ran MikTex Update (Admin), but this didn't solve the problem.

I'm now stuck, so any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Sorry, I forgot to say that I can install packages successfully using the p=

How do I update OS 9.0.4 to 9.2.2?
I am looking into upgrading my mother's 400MHz G3 iMac from OS 9.0.4 to OSX. She'll need more RAM (what would be optimum here?), but she seems to have enough disk space (10GB). Looking at Apple's "Upgrading Mac OS 9 to Mac OS X" web page I see that it is first recommended that you upgrade to OS 9.2.2 using the Software Update Control Panel. However when I tried to do that it didn't work! The first update attempt seemed to update Software Update itself, and the second got an update for something called CarbonLib. But further clicking on the Update Now button produ...

Installed python 2.5 over 2.4 and lost installed packages
Hi all, I recently updated os x from python 2.4 to 2.5 (from python.org) and in doing so I lost my old python path entries. Python 2.4 was installed using fink. Now when I do: import sys print sys.path my old site-packages directory is not within it (the 2.4 one). So what is the right thing to do in this situation? It would be a pain to find and re-install each of the packages. Is it ok to add my old site-packages directory to the sys.path? What is the best way to do so (e.g. using .pth files or PYTHONPATH or other)? Is cp'ing the files from one place to another safe or advisable?...

Installing MikTeX 2.9 on WinXp SP2
Downloaded ProTeX from here: http://www.tug.org/protext/ There is MiKTeX version 2.9 and after a long installation I found out that it requires WinXP Service pack 3 (on release notes shown AFTER installation). My questions: - what exactly is not working with WinXP SP 2? I mean, if I use MiKTeX + WinXP SP2 then how bad it is? - would it be better to install MiKTeK 2.8 instead of 2.9 in order to run it under WinXP SP2?
