MiKTeX 'Invalid argument' error

Please does anyone know the meaning of MiKTeX's 'invalid argument' error. M=
y file compiles fine but the DVI viewer reports this error and says its a '=
MiKTeX problem'. Acrobat viewer doesn't give this error and displays well. =
There is no help forthcoming from the MiKTeX mailing list. I can't find any=
error list/glossary in the MiKTeX manual.

Please is there an alternative to MiKTeX for Windows OS users?

It means what it says: Somewhere is an invalid argument.

How should someone be able to help you if you don't offer any
sensible information like a minimal example, how you compile and
which application gives the error? You didn't even say that you are
trying to use YAP!

Sorry but your question was like "I get an '! Undefined control
sequence.' error, what should I do?". I answer such questions only
if I have a lot time (which I haven't currently) and feel pity with
a real newbie (which you are not, you are a package writer, you
should be able to make better problem reports.)

Btw: If it is not a problem with your document but with the
application you will probably have to make a trace:

Interesting analogy. Thanks, I will check further.

Here are a few possible explanations:

 (1) The tex executable has a bug.
 (2) The DVI viewer has a bug.
 (3) The DVI viewer's configuration file (if any) contains
an error (this is really a subitem of (1) unless one
     edits that file oneself).
 (4) The DVI file has become corrupted.
 (5) The DVI file contains a \special not recognized
by the DVI viewer (or not in the format expected).

I have encountered all of these. I see (5) on a regular
basis and ignore it. But I have also induced (3) more
than a few times through experimentation (with an old
viewer called windvi). I have seen (4) in downloaded
files, and have reported bugs in class (1) and (2) a couple
of times over the years.

However, with all the different TeX engines around now,
I suppose it is also possible a "non-standard" DVI file
could be created by one of them, and that a viewer might
have a problem with that.

Finally, if a viewer needs to read a .map file for fonts,
it might encounter an invalid line in it. It is also
conceivable mktexpk might be reporting an error in bitmap
font generation.

Throw 'Error()' or 'new Error()'?
With custom exceptions, we have to create a new instance before we throw them: function AppError(msg) { this.msg = msg; // just an example } throw new AppError("I did bad"); To throw a StopIteration, on the other hand, we have to throw it directly: throw StopIteration; // object StopIteration throw new StopIteration(); // TypeError With Error, both are possible: throw Error("oops"); // object Error throw new Error("oops"); // object Error I've seen both forms a number of times now. 'UndefinedObject' error not caught with 'on: Error do:'
Hi, I'm having some trouble getting 'on: Error do:' to work. In the code below, subdExpression contains a maths-type formula that the user has entered, with their variables substituted for the correct values. eg If they enter 'a + 1', a gets replaced with their value for it. But if a does not exist, I want to tell them the error. [result := Compiler evaluate: subdExpression] on: Error do: [:ex | Transcript show: 'error'; cr. ^MessageBox errorMsg: 'There was an error in calculating the answer' caption: 'Calculation Error' ] . I have a form with many fields, each of which has their separate record sources in a split db. Has anyone encountered this error before? 2. If so, how was it overcome? 3. How can MS produce an error message that states : "There is no message for this error"? ipfw 'table' doens't exist? Gives "ipfw: setsockopt(IP_FW_TABLE_ADD): Invalid argument" Error
Hey, I've recently setup ipfw to attempt to block some of the abusers trying to gain access to my web server and have run into a problem. I was originally using add rules like so: add 600 deny log all from 218.0.0.0/8 to any in add 601 deny log all from 202.0.0.0/7 to any in add 602 deny log all from 219.0.0.0/8 to any in But after reading some information from newsgroups I was told it's best to use a table to deny large amounts of people as it improves efficiency, and was told to setup my ipfw.rules like so: ipfw table 666 add 218.0.0.0/8 ipfw table 666 add 202.0.0.0/7 ipfw table 666 add 219.0.0.0/8 ipfw table 666 add 222.0.0.0/8 ipfw table 666 add 124.0.0.0/8 ipfw add 400 deny ip from table(666) to any However when trying to run this, I get a seres of errors that all repeat the same thing: "ipfw: setsockopt(IP_FW_TABLE_ADD): Invalid argument" Not sure how to resolve this and my extensive Google searches have turned up nothing besides C scripting for ipfw. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in Advance. Controlling the text in plot 'xyz' title 'text'
Hi Can somebody help me out? I want to change the text fonts which appear in keys for every line, in command: plot "file" title "xyz" How to use desired font size for xyz above? Thanks -- Your's truly Masroor Bangesh help title: gnuplot> help title The `set title` command produces a plot title that is centered at the top of the plot. `set title` is a special case of `set label`. Syntax: set title {"<title-text>"} {offset <offset>} {"<font>{,<size>}"} {{textcolor | tc} {lt <line_type> | default}} {{no}enhanced} show title If <offset> is specified the title is moved by the given offset where <offset> is specified by either x,y or x,y,z, and may be preceded by `first`, `second`, `graph`, `screen`, or `character` to select the coordinate system. See `coordinates` for details. By default, the `character` coordinate system is used. For example, "`set title 0,-1`" will change only the y offset of the title, moving the title down by roughly the height of one character. <font> is used to specify the font with which the title is to be written; the units of the font <size> depend upon which terminal is used. `textcolor lt <n>` sets the text color to that of line type <n>. `noenhanced` requests that the title not be processed by the enhanced text mode parser, even if...
