problems with yap when using package "times" or "pslatex"

When I am using

\usepackage{times}

or

\usepackage{pslatex}

Yap report the problems when trying to show the DVI file.

The message reads:
---
Making PK font:
C:\PROGRA~2\TeX\MikTeX\miktex\bin\makepk.exe --verbose
ptmr8r 600 600 magstep(0.0) ljfive
name: ptmr8r, dpi=600, bdpi=600, mag=magstep(0.0), mode=ljfive
makemf --verbose ptmr8r
cannot find ptmr8r source file.
ttf2pk -q -n ptmr8r 600
hbf2gf -q -p ptmr8r 600
C:\Program
Files\TeX\localtexmf\fonts\pk\modeless\adobe\times\dpi600\ptmr8r.pk
already exists!

Loading 'cmr10' instead.
---

The same applies to ptmb8r, psyr, ...

If I don't use any font-package i.e. use standard cm fonts
everything works fine! What could be possibly wrong? I am
using the latest version of MikTeX 2.3 (just updated) under
Win2000. Should I reinstall some fonts? Which ones?

Thanks in advance,
Edward

times is obsolete. You should use \usepackage{mathptmx}.

There have been some reports lately about miktex not updating the
fontmaps.

Try in a command window the following two commands (close YAP before
you do it):

mkfntmap
initexmf -u

Good to know. ;-)

Oh! That fixed most of the problems. Still I get sometimes
this error especially when I change the mode in Yap, e.g.
from LaserJet 5 (600dpi) to LaserJet 4(600dpi)
for \usepackage{mathptmx} I get the single error:

Making PK font:
C:\PROGRA~2\TeX\MikTeX\miktex\bin\makepk.exe --verbose
rsfs10 600 600 magstep(0.0) ljfour
name: rsfs10, dpi=600, bdpi=600, mag=magstep(0.0), mode=ljfour
makemf --verbose rsfs10
cannot find rsfs source file.
ttf2pk -q -n rsfs10 600
hbf2gf -q -p rsfs10 600
makepk: don't know how to make rsfs10.pk!

In principle I can live with this, just using LaserJet 5
(600dpi) mode, but it all looks kind of buggy and, I think
should be fixed.

Thanks for help,
Edward

When you change the printer, YAP has to build new pk-fonts. If it
doesn't find the sources (perhaps you lost them somewhere during an
update) it will complain.

Look at groups.google.com for rsfs group:comp.text.tex to find out how
to install the rsfs-fonts.

"my" and "our"
Hi, while testing a program, I erroneously declared the same variable twice within a block, the first time with "my", the second time with "our": { my $fz = 'VTX_Link'; .... ( around 200 lines of code, all in the same block) our $fz = 'VTX_Linkset'; ... } So the initial contents of the $fz declared with "my" is lost, because "our" creates a lexical alias for the global $fz, thus overwriting the previous "my" declaration. It was my error, no question. But I wonder why Perl doesn't mention this - even with "use s...

"out" and "in out"
Hi i found the following explaination: In Ada, "in" parameters are similar to C++ const parameters. They are effectively read-only within the scope of the called subprogram. Ada "in out" parameters have a reliable initial value (that passed in from the calling subprogram) and may be modified within the scope of the called procedure. Ada "out" parameters have no reliable initial value, but are expected to be assigned a value within the called procedure. What does "have no reliable initial value" mean when considering the "out" parameter? By c...
