Text-wrapping and mathematics - state of the art

I'm interested in combining text-wrapping with mathematics.

I'm looking for examples of books that have both
a) substantial mathematical content
b) text wrapping around figures

For (b) I mean pages like this, where 'x' is text and 'i'
is illustration.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I'm interested in knowing something of the 'state of the
art'.

One book that has something of this is
"Oceanography: an invitation to marine sciences"
  by Tom Garrison, ISBN 0-534-37557-X

It's math content is low to medium.

I found it in the Open University library.

as far as I remember Alen Hatchers book "Algebraic Topology" has a lot of
these. Even other shapes than squares.

Have a look at http://www.math.cornell.edu/~hatcher/AT/ATpage.html

Thank you, Lars.

This is excellent. And Allen Hatcher has put the whole book up on the
web, for single non-commercial use.

I have paged through the preliminary chapter
  http://www.math.cornell.edu/~hatcher/AT/ATch0.pdf
and noted the following:
1. There are no floating figures.
2. There are non-floating page-width figures.
3. There are 'cut-in' marginal figures.
4. These 'cut-in' figures are associated with a single paragraph.
5. Sometimes the 'cut-in' figures fall at top or bottom of page.

The 'cut-in' figures (my term) have paragraphs shaped like

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I'd be surprised if there were not a fair amount of hand-crafting
in the production of this book.

However, I reckon it's pretty much 'state of the art'.

The web page
    http://www.math.cornell.edu/~hatcher/AT/typography.html
explains how he did it.

He uses plain TeX "in order to maximize control over the output".

I think this book is a very good example of what can be done, and
the problems that arise.

Allen Hatchers also writes on this web page:
> I am certainly not a master of TeX, and it has taken me quite a bit
> of trial and error to achieve some particular effects that I wanted.
> I'm sure there are more elegant ways of doing some of these things.

An important challenge for TeX developers, in my opinion, is to
understand the problems and either automate them or avoid them.

What is "text + text" supposed to do right now? It doesn't seem very useful to me. What about making "text + text" as an equivalent for "text || text"? Most strongly-typed programming languages do this.
