Urgent problem with font sizes in latex: signature page fonts, chapter page chapter name font

Hi there,

I am a newbie using Latex for writing my thesis. I have no clue how to
change the .sty or .cls files as I am using others templates, (.sty
files) directly on Winedt and editing them with my text. I use a
document class: report.The chapter font size in the beginning page of
each chapter has a large
font size. Is there a way I can reduce this font size to12?

Also in the table of contents page the dots dont extend to the page
numbers for the chapters and main headings. Only subsections etc.,
have dots extending to page numbers. Any help on this?

The Signature page shows up font sizes less than 10. Graduate school
demands font sizes between 10 and 12 consistently.

I will greatly appreciate any of your help with this as early as
possible.

Regards
Krishna

In response to your URGENT message, I didn't have time to work out all
your solutions, but rather have some suggestions:

Instead of having all the formatting explicitly written in your main
style file, use LaTeX packages. For example, the titlesec package
  \usepackage{titlesec}
available from CTAN at
  http://tug.ctan.org/cgi-bin/ctanPackageInformation.py?id=titlesec
to manipulate sectional heading formatting. This may be performed, for
example, by means of the command
  \titleformat{<command>}[<shape>]{<format>}{<label>}{<sep>}{<before>}
[<after>]
Read the documentation for more information on this and how it's used.
The accompanying titletoc package
  \usepackage{titletoc}
allows for reformatting 'Table of...' entries.

In addition to Werner's suggestion, make sure you are using
\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}
after loading the document class, to ensure you use scalable fonts.

Reading the file l2tabuen is a must if you are a newbie; it will save
you a lot of time.

CTAN has everything, and "Google is your friend"!

Good luck

T1 is an encoding not a font format.
T1 has nothing to do with type1 (scalable) fonts. It is even
possible that if you add T1-encoding your document will switch from
scalable (cm-)fonts to bitmap (ec-)fonts if you don't have the
cm-super fonts installed.

Thanks a lot for your help, I could fix the signature page
temporarily :-) Still dont know how I fixed though by modifiying
thesis.sty file as follows:

  % modified on 12th Jun, 2007
  \leftline{RECOMMENDED:}
  \setbox0\hbox{\small #1\ }
  \setlength{\sigwidth}{3in}
  \setlength{\overfar}{4.5in}
  \addtolength{\overfar}{-\sigwidth}
  \makecommitteelines
  \vspace{1.5cm}
  % end of modification

and it worked. The thing is I could get through getting the signatures
on the Signature page and the Grad school was ok with the font sizes

The only problem thats still hanging and has a weeks time in fixing
the font sizes on the Chapter (20 font), Section at the beginning of
each Chapter page as follows.

Chapter 3 <---- (20 font)

Chapter title BLAH BLAH <---- (24 font)

1.1 Objective of Chapte BLAH <--- (14 font)

Text of the first section of this chapter <--- (11 font)

I could get these numbers by using the acrobat full reader/ touch up
tool and then properties. is there a way to reduce the font sizes to
between 10-12 according to our grad school requirements please.. Could
you anybody help me in detail please.

To change the typography of the 'Table of Contents' (and 'List of...'
chapter*s), you could use the tocloft package, available from CTAN at
  http://tug.ctan.org/cgi-bin/ctanPackageInformation.py?id=tocloft

....by this I mean the following, seeing as you've already
'investigated' the tocloft package. You could change the font
specification of \cfttoctitlefont (or \cftloftitlefont or
\cftlottitlefont for that matter) to suit your needs. For example,

\usepackage{tocloft}

\renewcommand{\contentsname}{Table of Contents} % Don't need the
tocloft package for this
\renewcommand{\cfttoctitlefont}{\large\bfseries} % Need the tocloft
package for this

Thanks a lot Werner

I could modify the table of contents title from 'Contents' to 'Table
of Contents' center align it. However my list of figures and list of
tables font size and alignment seems to be not working althought I
cross checked the tocloft.pdf file for the conventions... Any
suggestion on this Werner??

Here's my main file.. You will also see the code where I added to
\renewcommand{\contentsname}{Table of Contents}
However the similar code for List of Figures and List of Tables is not
working...

Something wrong?? Any suggestions??

\cleardoublepage %%% ONLY IF USING TOCLOFT PACKAGE
\listoffigures %\thispagestyle{myheadings}

\cleardoublepage %%% ONLY IF USING TOCLOFT PACKAGE

A couple of comments on the LaTeX code:
  [1] Using your definitions, you redefined \listoffigures and
\listoftables rather than \listfigurename and \listtablename. This
completely destroyed all the definitions involved in creating a 'List
of Figures' and 'List of Tables'...hence the fact that it merely
printed the titles 'List of Figures' and 'List of Tables'...but did
nothing else.
  [2] Use \cleardoublepage before the \tableofcontents,
\listoffigures, and \listoftables command. This will make sure that
you always start on an odd page.
  [3] I've added \hfill before and after the contents entries, hence
centering them. That's what it seemed like you wanted in your original
document.

Thanks werner,

I could finally fix all the problems much before than anticipated..
Thanks for all of your peoples tips, and google and searches on this
group.

For some reason when I used tocloft package the toc, lof and lot would
not appear in a respective new page and hence \newpage was used.
However your suggestion to use "[2] Use \cleardoublepage before the
\tableofcontents,
\listoffigures, and \listoftables command. This will make sure that
you always start on an odd page." resulted in the same changes...

Could you make me understand what you meant by "always start on an odd
page"??

Thanks a lot for all your help and it was great LaTexing.

Krishna,

Yes, typically it's not such a good idea to manually change the
contents of a .sty file. One should rather just use it as is, and
redefine some of the commands (using something like \renewcommand, for
example), or make up your own new ones (using something like
\newcommand, for example) using some of the old ones. Therefore, copy
the changed contents into your main LaTeX document preamble after the
required package is loaded and keep the package in its original form.
That's just the way I usually do things. I understand that advanced
TeX-ers will probably differ in opinion...

For an explanation of the \cleardoublepage in a two-sided document,
see, for example
  http://www-h.eng.cam.ac.uk/help/tpl/textprocessing/teTeX/latex/latex2e-html/ltx-212.html

Thanks a lot Werner. Wooow... I learnt a so much texing in just three
days, after all that three years of using Latex. As of now, I will try
to see if I can keep the things as is i.e., use the packages and keep
the modified style files in their original locations, as theres only
one week left before I submit my final copy :-). Only thesis.sty file
is in my main folder where I run my main tex files from. So I thought
it must be possible that I copy the tocloft.sty and sectsty.sty files
also into my main folder rather than modifying them in their original
folder and still be able to run them without any problem. Is this a
possibility? Does latex first search for the style files in the main
folder and then go to the default folder where all the packages are?
Is there a problem with method overloading, pre-defined style files
and so on?

I will try your idea later for sure: copying all the changed contents
into my main Latex document preamble after I am done with my grad
school submissions. As I am little worried I dont have time and
patience to fix any other new errors that will pop up later in the
next one week :-(

Regarding the \cleardoublepage, I could only understand its usage,
however, in terms of a two-sided document, rather than my one sided
document thesis. So I thought \newpage should suffice my need to push
the titles along with contents of toc, lof and lot into the next pages
rather than appearing as a continuous document.

Thanks a lot..

Krishna

If your document is one-sided, you could use \clearpage instead of the
two-sided document \cleardoublepage command.
  http://www-hermes.desy.de/latex/ltx-213.html
The only reason why I would consider \clearpage instead of \newpage is
because of the stipulated definition of \cleardoublepage - it is meant
to 'flush' all heaped up info...and start afresh...as opposed to
anew(...page). :) Of course, if there is nothing to flush (like
floating figures/tables), then \newpage would probably be equivalent.

Hi Werner,

My thesis is stuck at meeting the final graduate school requirements.
I do not have a list of appendices and the graduate school wants the
appendices to be listed in the "List of Appendices", similar to the
"List of Figures" and "List of Tables". Could you help me create the
List of Appendices with the right entries.

I have an entry in my thesis.sty file

\def\listofappendix{\@restonecolfalse\if@twocolumn\@restonecoltrue
\onecolumn
 \fi\chapter*{List of Appendices\@mkboth
 {LIST OF APPENDICES}{LIST OF APPENDICES}}%
 \addcontentsline{toc}{chapter}{List of Appendices}%
 \@starttoc{loa}\if@restonecol\twocolumn \fi
}

And, by using \listofappendix{} in the main tex file creates a page
with "List of Appendices" but no entries in it. I find that the
tocloft.sty package or any other packages that I use (see below) do
not discuss or show how the entries can be made into the "list of
appendices" document. Any help in this regards would be appreciated.
However, there are entries for "list of figures" and "list of tables"
in the tocloft.sty file which I believe are generating the right
content for these pages.

My main tex file package list:
\documentclass[11pt]{report}
\usepackage{amssymb,latexsym,amsmath}
\usepackage[dvips]{graphicx}
\usepackage{pst-node}
\usepackage{thesis}
\usepackage{lscape}
\usepackage{supertabular}
\usepackage{tocloft}
\usepackage{sectsty}

And even worse, the tables and figures in the appendices are listed in
the "List of Figures" and "List of Tables" and the graduate school
wants me to remove them.

Could any body help me create the proper "list of appendices" asap
please and remove appendix entries from List of Figures and List of
Tables.

Problem: Latex cannot find a TTF font installed by the Miktex TTF font installer
Short version: I have the Sabon font as TTF and would like to use it from Miktex. I have tried using various methods, including the Miktex font installer, but failed. I think the Sabon font is installed (the self-test seems to indicate that) but still pdftex complains that the font shape is undefined. How should I proceed, please? Long version: I'll redo all the steps (2006-04-11) and log them here. This is on Windows XP Professional, Version 2002, Service pack 2. First let's ensure that the system is up to date. I run the Miktex update wizard 2.4.1704. Update from Internet. Sele...

Changing chapter font size

I don't want to switch to report or article, book is fine. But I would like to shrink the size a bit. I played around with renewcommand but had no luck, yet. \newcommand*{\tmpchap}{} \let\tmpchap=3D\chapter \renewcommand*{\chapter}{\normalsize\tmpchap} seems to be a bit too naive to work.... Font and Font CE
In many programs, installed fonts are appearing twice in the font menu, once as "font" and once as "font CE". What's the story behind this? What's the story behind this? (OS > 10.2.8) You've enabled something about Central European input (perhaps a Polish or Estonian keyboard). The CE fonts are the ones that have easy mappings for the characters that appear in those orthographies and not in the various western/Roman alphabets (English, French, etc.). -- AF "Non Sequitur U has a really, really lousy debate team." --artyw raises the bar on rec.sport.baseball Alice Faber wrote: > You've enabled something about Central European input German and Arabic, to be precise. So what's the deal? I've noticed that the fonts concerned are all of the type ".dfont" and they appear twice only in programs that have a "traditional" font menue. In plain TeX it would be simple; \font\biggerfont cmr10 at 15pt \footline={\hfil\biggerfont\pageno\hfil\rm} In Context it is a single command: \setuppagenumbering[style=\tfb,location=footer...(etc.] ....where \tfb is one size larger than normal. \tfc is two sizes larger etc. In LaTeX I have no clue. -- John Culleton Able Indexers and Typesetters > In LaTeX I have n...

Font problem (TTF2f / Unicode fonts)
Iyonix, RO5.08, standard Font directory with only SansMono and OCRB fonts added. I am trying to get NetSurf to use the unicode fonts, but I am having difficulties. I've converted the Bitstream CyberBit, Code2000 and Arial Unicode MS fonts with TTF2f to RISC OS format. Used base 99, 98 and 97 for them. I copied the /Base<n> files to a directory '!Font.Encodings' (didn't exist, so had to create that one). I read on the NetSurf list that I had to do something to the Messages1 file, so I added BEncoding_Base97:* there. Not sure if this is needed only for the MS font, or al...

How to figure out font file from font name
Acrobat Reader tells me that a certain (PdfTeX generated) PDF file contains the following fonts: SFSS0900, SFSX1728, SFRM1000, SFTI1000, SFRM1095 and SFBX1095. I would like to know to what actual font files these rather terse names happen to refer to. How can I figure that out? (I cannot find any font files with these names in my own TeX font tree, but that is perhaps simply because I do not, at present, have these particular fonts installed on my system). Many thanks in advance for any ideas, Christian "Christian Stapfer" <nobody@nowhere.nil> schrieb im...

Font name in Windows font dialogs

Combining Math Fonts with Text Fonts
Dear all, I have two questions. 1) Are there any solid guidelines about what properties a math font should have if you want tp combine it with a given text font? I am aware of Stephan Hartke's ``A Survey of Free Math Fonts for TeX and LaTeX'' but this ``just'' lists some nice combinations; it doesn't list the guidelines. I'd be much obliged if anybody could provide me with some pointers. 2) I am thinking of buying a font licence for FF Nexus, but I need some advice for a good accompanying math font. Unfortunately, the licence is pretty expensive: it would be a pitty to buy it and then find that there's no nice accompanying math font. One of the main reasons why I'd like to use FF Nexus is because it has a serif, a sans serif, a slab serif, and a typewriter typeface which go very well together. I'm thinking of using the serif for the main text, the sans serif for captions, the slab serif for section titles, and the typewriter for identifiers. (You may find more information about FF Nexus on http://www.martinmajoor.com/4_nexus.html.) Again, I'd be much obliged for suggestions. It would be nice if you could let me know why you think a particular suggestion is nice. Of course, ideally the math font should be free. Thanks in advance for your help.
