I've got a Sun SPARCstation Voyager sitting here, and I have no idea
what the root password is. I have tried using various Slackware
FAT-formatted disks, I've tried booting from Slackware and Red Hat
CDs, and I can't get at the drive from this computer because of the
unique-to-Sun 50pin micro IDC connector.
I'm downloading Solaris 9 for i386 at the mo, but I don't know whether
or not it includes bootdisks (UFS formatted) or UFS formatting tools.
If it does, then I won't have any problems... If it doesn't, is there
any way to get a UFS-formatted boot/root disk image? (all I need to do
is edit the bloomin /etc/passwd or /etc/shadow and I'll be fine!!)

You do know that the voyager has a Sparc processor rather than an
x86, right?

Boot from, say, a Solaris 5.3 CD into single user mode, mount the
/ partition, edit the passwd file, and you're good to go. I think the
problem is that you're assuming x86 here, which would be why none of it
is working.

Of note: the last Solaris release which supported the Voyager
is Solaris 7 (SPARC!)

There is a patch (which I have) to use for later versions of Solaris.

Upto Solaris 9? (Won't work for Solaris 10 for obvious reasons)

Not sure about 9, would you like it? If so, let's take this to email.
