IBM DB2 UDB and EMC CX500

Hi,

is there some guilines for configuring EMC CX500 for DB2 database, how
to place tablespaces,
how many virtual disks to prepare on cx500 ( one big, each tablespace
on separate disk, place
part of each tablespace on one of many disks,...)?

Regards

The DBA should be telling you how to lay out your DB .. That is a major
part of the DB Design. What you should do in preparation is carve up
some disks from seperate ranks on your storage unit to avoid hotspots,
then present them to AIX .. depending on how you are going to have your
tablespace containers (DMS files or DMS raw - ** do not use SMS if you
can help it **), then you can carve up those disks. The DBA will then
place the tablespace container on specific LUNs (filesystem file or LV
for raw)

It really does depend on the DB / Size / Usage ..

If you place 2 tablespace containers on 2 seperate disks, then db2 will
balance between them. Usually db2 DBAs prefer this method than to
stripe across all the LUNs etc because its easy to add a container and
romove a container and let db2 sort it out.

Your logs f/s should be striped across as many spindles as you can
spare.

One thing with DBs is the more the highly accessed data is spread
across more spindles the better.

raid10 is the way to go for pure perf, but raid5 is not that far behind
for all round perf.

Also, use cio on the tablespace i.e. "NO FILE SYSTEM CACHING"

Check out these docs ..

Raid5 and Raid10 have similar performance on "reads".
Not so on writes.... I would use Raid10 for a DB if at all possible.

Hi, All, We have a database on db2 udb aix. The database has federated server to db2 mainframe. Now We have already catalog database of db2/400 on the db2 UDB aix server. I tried to create new federation server for db2as/400. It seam has problem. 1. can the db2 mainframe and db/400 have the same wrapper? Our existing db2 mainframe uses the wrapper with library libdb2drda.a This wrapper is used by db2 mainframe 2. DB2/UDB on UNIX:
Quick Question: If I have an instance of UDB/DB2 on a UNIX box, can I have it act as something like a load balancer, where all it's doing is sending the SQL traffic out to another DB2 instance? So the traffic would look like: client --> DBInst1 --> DBinst2 --> DBInst2.database Thanks for any thoughts. Can I ask why you would want to do this? Is this an application requirement? Why wouldn't you use the new connection concentrator function that is built natively into DB2 UDB? It allows you to maintain a limit on the number of concurrently executing age...

DB2 UDB 8.1 Vs DB2 UDB 8.2

Upgrade client from 7.1.6 to 8.2 and upgrade server from 8.1 to 8.2 2. Upgrade server from 8.1 to 8.2 and no client upgrade Thanks, Me What do you mean by "issues"? You should research these by looking through the DB2 publications for those release levels including the release notes, quick beginnings, etc. You might even want to open a PMR with IBM. seeking opinion on using Veritas agent on AIX (IBM Unix) to do ontape backups
I guess the subject says it all...is it safe? I dont really want to do my AIX hosted database backups over the network, but we have this nice shiney LTO drive that lives on a Windows 2003 server that I can use (via Veritas) to do backups. Is anyone doing this? Whats the gotchas, other than the several layers of complexity and new points of failure? Also occurs to me to wonder how much support I can expect from Informix/IBM when things go wrong. Look at me talking myself out of it already! Please weigh in oh-wise-ones! onbar is an xbsa "compliant" backup mechanism that will work with xbsa compliant storage devices. Provided that you have appropriate IBM Informix maintenance and the IBM Informix product you are using is fully supported I see no reason why IBM Informix would not help you with support of their component (onbar). IBM informix support would be unlikely to be able to provide much assistance with the Veritas side. Through the use of the Informix support team you probably get a lot of assistance in tracking down any problems onbar has quite a nice "fault finding" utility, the BARDEBUG facility, which can generate various levels of debug. This normally provides information that the storgae manager provider can work with. If you considered using Tivoli rather than Veritas as your xbsa complaint storage manager, then both omponents would be IBMs issue and the IBM and Tivoli teams would be able to work together ...
