seeking opinion on using Veritas agent on AIX (IBM Unix) to do ontape backups
I guess the subject says it all...is it safe? I dont really want to do my AIX hosted database backups over the network, but we have this nice shiney LTO drive that lives on a Windows 2003 server that I can use (via Veritas) to do backups. Is anyone doing this? Whats the gotchas, other than the several layers of complexity and new points of failure? Also occurs to me to wonder how much support I can expect from Informix/IBM when things go wrong. Look at me talking myself out of it already! Please weigh in oh-wise-ones! onbar is an xbsa "compliant" backup mechanism that will work with xbsa compliant storage devices. Provided that you have appropriate IBM Informix maintenance and the IBM Informix product you are using is fully supported I see no reason why IBM Informix would not help you with support of their component (onbar). IBM informix support would be unlikely to be able to provide much assistance with the Veritas side. Through the use of the Informix support team you probably get a lot of assistance in tracking down any problems onbar has quite a nice "fault finding" utility, the BARDEBUG facility, which can generate various levels of debug. This normally provides information that the storgae manager provider can work with. If you considered using Tivoli rather than Veritas as your xbsa complaint storage manager, then both omponents would be IBMs issue and the IBM and Tivoli teams would be able to work together ...

OLD IBM Hardware w/AIX 4.2 on SCSI HD, Is it possible to install HD on another OS
I have this old stand alone IBM AIX system running 4.2. No network connection or tape drive. Is there anyway I can get this HD installed on another version of Unix ( LINUX ). I just need the data to be accessible so I can put it on a tape or copy over network to another AIX Machine. I want to avoid trying to install the HD on a production machine if I can somehow get the HD accessed from a PC running Linux. Any ideas ?? AIX developer access or hardware to run AIX (Europe)
Hi, Is there, just like for Linux on Power an organization that allows you to access an AIX machine as a software developer? I will mainly use it for porting software to AIX, but also for learning about the differences between Linux and AIX. Alternatively I would consider buying a machine (new or second hand), but I don't really know what the mininum requirements are for a machine capable of running Linux and AIX 6.1. But I have problems finding a site that sells these machines to European customers (more particulary Belgium customers). Does anybody know a site that sells to European customers? Most IBM resellers sell only to corporate customers. Thanks a lot, Kind regards, Roel. rsergeant <rsergeant@gmail.com> writes: > Is there, just like for Linux on Power an organization that allows you > to access an AIX machine as a software developer? My experience is if they don't go away from properly formatted ipcs / ipcrm commands, it's because they're tied to processes which are hung waiting on kernel threads (and basically, defunct). In which case you need to kill the owning process (which is already dead, and which probably won't respond to a kill -9 since it's stuck in a kernel thread) or reboot the box. SAP is the worst offender in this regard IME. It's the only app I've ever known people have to constantly clear down shared memory / semaphores for when it doesn't shut down cleanly. -- Tony Evans Saving trees and wasting electrons since 1993 blog...
