comp.unix.bsd.freebsd is not widely propagated, so you won't
necessarily get much help here (in comp.unix.bsd.freebsd).
See http://www.freebsd.org/support.html for better ideas...

An error code 1 from make means that something make called returned a
failure. This isn't particularly useful.

permission denied on tar is more useful; sounds like you don't have
access to the tar executable. That isn't the case on any distribution
of FreeBSD, so if you accurately transcribed the error code, you seem
to have changed permissions on your executables; not a particularly
good idea unless you know what you're doing.

This was incorrectly posted top level.
Ok /usr/bin/tar is a file and that the permissions are -rw---------. What
function does the tar file do here? What permissions should it have in order
to perform the make install actions? Is it used in any other manner except
make install?
In response to LG
I pretty much a default install of freebsd4.9 and did not set any particular
file permissions. regular file measn anything other than a directory?
TIA
