can no longer send mail through my netbsd firewall

  • Follow

Hello, I am runing a netbsd firewall and using a windows box inside to
do my general mail and internet stuff. I am running outlook and have
had no problems until recently. However, I can no longer send mail I
can recieve mail but not send mail. This just started happening
recently.

I am getting the following errors:
Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible
causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long
period of inactivity. Account: 'pop.mts.net', Server: 'smtp.mts.net',
Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F

Note that if connect my mail box straight to the internet, i.e.,
bypass my netbsd box, I can send mail so I am thinking that something
must be wrong with my netbsd box. However, I have made not changes to
the firewall so this is a wierd problem for me.

Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated ............ thanks
... Reagan

What is recently? What kernel version?

Recently is, I have the same kernel/install, netbsd 1.6.1, that I have
been running now for at least 6 months. The problem is as of late,
like the past couple of weeks, I cannot receive email from my isp via
my firewall. I have changed nothing on my end. My ISP is MTS they are
a telephone company. So either they have changed something that
requies me to make changes or my box has become corrupted or possibly
compromised. I am just trying to find out if this has happened to
someone in the past and if so what did you do to fix it because I
can't for the life of me figure out why this setup can no longer
receive email.

thanks ......... Reagan

I don't know. Something must have changed on their side to cause this.
I suggest that you try a 1.6.2 kernel.

I have been reading that a lot of ISP's have started blocking outbound
SMTP/port 25 traffic from their subscribers in an attempt to clamp down
on spammers operating from (or through via hijacked PC's) their user
base. I would suggest checking with your ISP about that.

Yes, this is the real cause. My ISP is started blocking the smtp 25, so
when I connect from outside to my internal mail server, it failed. I
think you can change port 25 to something else. I did change it to 1025,
but few days later, they also blocked 1025. Now I m using port 3000. :))

But there is no real benefit for me to change the port number like this,
as I need to host a site for email demo for my clients, so I will move
the server and firewall to a data centre very soon.

But I wonder if I use encryption on smtp traffic, would this can escape
from the ISP's detection?

Any other suggestion to avoid this checking by ISP?

You can use your isp's outgoing smtp by enabling smarthost in the
sendmail.cf file. You just put something like this in it under smarthost:

DSsmtp.myisp.net

Only difference is your first hop will be to the isp. That way
they can control relaying, etc.

Do you know how do you do this in Postfix?
Another issue related to this smtp port blocking by ISP is somehting I
don't understand. The issue is after changed the port number to 1025, I
closed port 25. Now I can connect to the POP3 port and start sending and
receiving email externally. But when I send email to my account using
yahoo or hotmail, I found that I need to open port 25. After open port
25 again, my internal email now can receive external email.

Now I have port 1025 and 25 opened, one for direct connection from
external pop3/imap client, another is for receiving external email from
yahoo or hotmail.

I remember that I assumed if ISP blocked incoming email on port 25, I
won't be able to receive email even if I open port 25. Is there any
explaination about this /issue/?

Thanks
Sam

They can't block incoming mail on port 25. If they do you won't
be able to receive mail using their system. What that block
is outgoing port 25.

I am not familiar with postfix but I assume you should be able
to specifiy the outgoing server in that setup too.

I haven't experimented with using other ports however it's supposed
to work. THere is some discussion of it at noip.com (dynamic ip host).

I just have it tested by putting mail01.myisp.com in the option tag
relayhost= in postfix, the mail bounced back and said that myisp does
not know my mail domian.

I think in real situiation, I will need to talk to my isp and insert my
domain name in their conf file?

thanks

Why not just use your ISP's smtp service as SMART_HOST? I suspect that's
what they'd prefer you do anyway...
