Possible to run Solaris binaries on Linux/Sparc?

  • Follow

I seem to remember that there was a ways to do this. Is there?

Note: I think there is something called "lxrun" that goes the other way
(runs Linux compiled binaries under Solaris), but I want to be able to
compile under Solaris and run on Linux.

The iBCS layer used to let you do that with Solaris/x86 binaries on
Linux/x86. I'm not familiar with anything similar for SPARC, though.
Is that what you're remembering (rather than anything for SPARC)?

When you say "compile under Solaris and run on Linux" do really mean
*just* compile on Solaris or do you mean "compile *and run* on Solaris
and run on Linux"? If you're just compiling on Solaris and running on
Linux, you might be able to set up GCC in a cross-compiler mode to
generate Linux binaries from Solaris.

I don't think that's (reliably) possible. WHy not compile the progs
on Linux, or (better) just use Solaris?

No, actually, what I'm "remembering" is that a friend of mine thought he
had heard that it was possible. FOAF and all that...

Actually, that was just by way of explanation (to make the item clearer).
Really, I want to be able to use the Solaris binaries I already have, and -
to answer the other poster's question - the reason is that I have a machine
running Sparc/Linux and for various reasons, it does not a robust
development environment installed.

Cross-compiler would be nice - I know that it is possible in theory, but
I have yet to get around to putting it together.
