can I run unix shell command in the ModelSim shell?
Hi, Just wonder if I can run unix shell command in the Modelsim shell, expecially those time/date command? Thanks. clinton__bill@hotmail.com wrote: > Hi, > Just wonder if I can run unix shell command in the Modelsim shell, > expecially those time/date command? ModelSim uses Tcl as its scripting language so (almost) anything you can do from Tcl can be done in ModelSim. Tcl has a variety of shell and file interaction commands available. Of course, if you want to execute Unix commands, you need to be running on a Unix (or Cygwin) system. Note that Tcl commands are NOT direct...

I have compiled a program called mk, and it's internal routines work with unixlib in a taskwindow happily enough. However the wheels fall off when a recipe wants to 'fire up' a child process for calling the gcc commands. It's a little confusing, because it echos the command perfectly to it's running Taskwindow, but errors with mk fork Invalid argument Looking inside a bit further, I think the error comes from a program unix.c where there also is reference to /bin/sh Should I be trying to map this to a new Taskwindow with Set UnixFS$/bin/sh Taskwindow or some redirection? Unix Shell
I'm new to RUBY, but am familar with other scripting languages, PHP, Perl, Wscript, etc. I'd like to be able to run items from the shell such as ls -l > dirlisting.txt. Just an example. Can I do this? I would have just used the search on these forums, but unfortuantely when I click Search I get "The page cannot be found". Hope they can get this fixed so I won't have to ask every little question. Thanks in advance. -Greg -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/. [ANNOUNCE] wxAda (pre-pre-pre-pre-release)
Hi, Just thought I'd post a little note about the status of the project. I have uploaded the source to Tigris. This is not complete and I have stalled. I have recently stumbled across major blocks which I need help with. Or if somebody wants to take over leading development, I have no problem with that; my future with wxAda isn't too clear to me at the moment. The source isn't in the best way, but it does build with wxWidgets 2.6.3 and does provide some functionality. Please feel free to look over the project and see what can be done. Thanks, Luke. I forgot in the rush, the URL is: http://wxada.tigris.org Luke. How to Access Unix Shell
In a python program, I want to do a Unix directory list and then append selected files to each other which, as you know, is just "cat filename2 >> filename1." How do I escape into the shell and then return, bringing with me a directory list? Where can I find some examples of mixing shell commands and Python? irb and unix shells
Can you use irb in place of shells like bash or rc? > Can you use irb in place of shells like bash or rc? not really, but kinda, yeah. you can do "system ('any unix command')" from inside irb really easily, and you could also set up a method which automatically took any input you gave irb and passed that along to system, but you wouldn't get tab-completion, you'd have to manually print the strings you received back - they come back with newline escape sequences rather than newlines - and I really don't know how you would be able to get system (or backticks, ...

Unix without shell
Another thread (on find ... -exec ...) got me thinking about "pure Unix", i.e. Unix without a shell. I realize that, with the exception of the occasional find ... -exec ..., and maybe at login time, I don't know of any other instance in which I interact with Unix without some shell's intervention. In fact I don't have a very clear idea of where the shell ends and Unix begins. I want to remedy this situation. I'm sure it's a royal pain to deal with Unix without the services of a shell, but I would like to experience it first hand. Is it possible? I suppose...

UNIX shell script question
I try with a UNIX shell script to do some actions in each subdirectories. Here is my script: #!/bin/sh DIRS=`ls -Q` for userdir in $DIRS do #do some action on each dir echo $userdir done My problem is that I have directories with whitespaces in their name. For example I have the following directories: test 1 test 2 test 3 test 4 I get the following output: "test 1" "test 2" "test 3" "test 4" I would expect the following: "test 1" "test 2" "test 3" "test 4" In the variable DIRS I get the fol...

Python vs Unix shells
This is really a comment on "Python in Systems Administration: Part I -- Better Scripting" http://www.samag.com/documents/s=8964/sam0312a/0312a.htm by Cameron Laird. Reading the article, although I am a fan of Python, I kinda take issue with the example given. It doesn't seem to fit with the concept of 'many smaller utilities doing one thing well, connected via pipes' If I had the task of writing a Unix utility to match the GUI Python example I would prefer to either: 1) save a sorted file listing to a temporary file then use either $EDITOR or vi to edit the temporary ...

The Chess Model (aka Iterative Model, Tactical Model)
Chess is IMO the best model for describing nearly everything in life, even the life itself: if there can be at least one reaction to an action, and this is usually always true, then one has to re-evaluate the plan after every action. Applied to SW engineering, or any other project in life: a strict pre-planning is impossible (much like in chess), a project must be seen and practiced only as an iterative process where each action and the response to it must lead to a re-evaluation of the overall goals (global strategy), and then for refining the goals and the strategy for the next turn (milestone/phase). The consequence is: everything in life, incl. a project, must be seen as a dynamic process, and there must always be the possibility given for refining the next steps of the process . Is this extreme? While it does have a few limitations, it nonetheless does provide as near a complete Unix-like environment as you're likely to find anywhere, and you really can do a whole lot with it. As a Unix-learning environment for those not quite ready to take the plunge and trash their Windows installation and go ahead and install a real Unix, it can't be ...
