ANN: OpenSolaris is available NOW!

  • Follow

Hi all,

For those of you that haven't already heard, OpenSolaris is
available to everyone, today. Now.

Open source code, free compilers and tools, documentation, and
much more is available from www.opensolaris.org. Oh, and the
first 1,000 visitors to opensolaris.org will get a free T shirt!

Methinks a lot of people (the most vociferous of naysayers) will
be eating their (Red) Hats...

Ladies and gentlemen, start your downloads!

It's about time! Those dirty proprietary pseudo-open-source liars at
Sun promised us that it would be out by the end of Q2, and that's only
a month away from now! I wanted it before they announced it!

Rich, perhaps you should have cross-posted this one to
comp.os.linux.advocacy?! ;-)

No worries, i'm sure they'll find **something** that isn't right.

I did think about it, but I figured Mike Cox would do that for me. :-)

Doubtless. I'll even give 'em a freebie: it's not licensed by the GPL.

Well at least some people won't have noticed that at the same time 1000
switched to 5000, the T-shirts were replaced by cool gifts...

According to the press call I just listened to, they ran out after about
50 minutes. I can't remember if that was the initial 1000 or all 500.

Yep, most T-shirts/hour ever in Sun giveaway; so quickly that they didn't
switch it off quickly enough and missed the target by about a 1000.

(SO we;re giving out 6000 and not 5000 Tshirts)

50 min for the first 1000; and then we added 4000 more.

If I get enough time to make a worthwhile contribution, I moight help
with the PPC port (although I have another target closer to heart).
But complete distros I'll leave in the more than capable hands of
Herr Schilling et al.

I'd love to see the PPC port running on the Dreambox satellite
receiver :-)

It is currently running linux, and AFAIK most of the sources to the
software is available. Don't know if it would be possible/legal to
port the receiver specific parts to Opensolaris though.

Rewrite it. Or talk to the original author/s and get permission to port the
relevant bits and pieces to OpenSolaris, under the CDDL.

Who knows - they might well agree! ;)

Ah, but the t-shorts _weren't_ downloadable. You'd think they would've come
up with _downloadable_ _t-shirts_ by now! :-)

If you succeed to convince Sun to monitor le.c, check it for encumberences
and release it in case it is OK, you may already be ready with the hard
part :-)

Might be able to port the pcnet driver to sparc.
It's basically the same chip, although the bus
interfacing is obviously different.

Would that be necessary if some developer wished to release the binaries
or even just a source code patch himself?

Hey, I was at the doctor's office when the announcement hit so
I missed the T shirt :)

Shouldn't there be some kind of medical exception for this kind
of thing?

This is going to be fun...
