I believe the next release will be out in December, but does anyone have a date?
I was thinking of buying my wife a laptop for her birthday (12th Dec) and was
wondering if it would be out by then, in which case I'd wait and install it.
Otherwise I'll put 06/2009 on it. I suspect I am going to be out of luck, but
the next release might just make it in time for me.

If it hasn't been announced, it's most likely protected by NDA and I
doubt it could be announced here. Maybe a nice hat instead...

The next release is called "2010.02" (see
<http://hub.opensolaris.org/bin/view/Main/downloads> which is quite
likely to miss your wife's birthday by a bit.
Have you looked at the Toshiba laptops preloaded with OpenSolaris?

It wasn't just now when I googled.
The only one Sun/Toshiba seem to be selling right now in the UK is the
NB200, which might not be what Dave wants anyway.

I installed 06.2009 on my laptop only to find out that the power
management doesn't support suspend/resume. There's an open project
for this, but it looks like there's a lot of work left. See:
http://hub.opensolaris.org/bin/view/Project+suspend-resume/
I gave up and installed another OS.

I went for the Tosh M10, picked up a refurb for 550ukp (4Gb RAM, 2,6Ghz
+ 200Gb HD)
Wiped Vista and bunged OpenSol on.
