Copying printers definition from a host to new

  • Follow

Hi,

how can I transfer printers definition from a host to new in Solaris
10?
All printers are created with Webmin.

Regards.

It might be easier to add printer definitions to Solaris 10 and forget
about the old definitions.

It has been at least two years since I added printers to a system
running Solaris 10. The printer was a LaserJet 4000 equipped with a
JetDirect card. I was pleasantly surprised to be asked to pick a
manufacturers name from a list, and then to pick a model from another
list. I had to specify that it was a network printer and supply the IP
address. That was all there was to it! Having had to do it "old style"
many long years ago, I was thrilled to find that the misery was gone,
there were no arcane commands or procedures to discover and then follow.

Thank you Sun and HP!!

I've never tried it myself, but I believe all the necessary configuration
is kept in /etc/lp and /etc/printers.conf.

If you have that many printers, you should have written an automated
script to run on every newly installed machine to setup printers for
you. If you don't, then why not spend the time to write one now?

Does not cups work around that by only needing to setup the cupsserver?

Don't you still have to define the print queues on each system,
regardless of if the printer is local or networked? Printing via a
printserver still, IIRC, requires the local machine knowing that the
print queue exists. Or has that changed such that printers now annouce
themselves ala MacOS 9's Chooser?

When I nstall cups I only defined the printer queues on the
printserver, then install the cups client on the clients and removed the
original lp lpr command.

Works great, long ago when I started with cups I purchased cups for
Solaris from Easysw, licensed per server.
