On Solaris 10 when I do a metastat
it gives me the disk serial and model numbers
at the botton like this:
Device Relocation Information:
Device Reloc Device ID
c3t2d0 Yes id1,sd@SSEAGATE_ST336704LSUN36G_3CD1KXJY000021317ZA4
c2t2d0 Yes id1,sd@SSEAGATE_ST336704LSUN36G_3CD1KHSY00002132DNUQ
Is there any way to get the same info in

SDS 4.2.1 in Solaris 8 doesn't use that information, so I don't know of
anything in the meta* commands that will display it.
You might look at 'iostat -En' output.

soft patition problem Solaris disk suite Solaris 8
I am facing a problem on my v 440 box running Solaris 8.
One of the soft partitions has gone bad and is in maintaince state. It
asks for invoking metareplace d15 d16 < new device >. However I only
see soft errors in the corresponding disk ( iostat -En ).
Is there any way, I can get that soft partition back. If I use the
metarecover command, it will be for all the soft partitions including
which are not in errored state.
Getting Serial Number from newer Solaris boxes I've been using prtconf -vp to list the motherboard serial number of my
boxes. My problem is that this information is no longer displayed on
newer boxes (especially Sun Fire ones).
Any other way to get it (except having a look at the rear of the server
or under the boot prompt)
How to mirror disks using JET Hi Guys,
How can I mirror the disks using JET (Solaris 8). I have done normal
jumpstart installs using JET.

Install the "sds" module (JetSDS), and all the details you need should
be in the template.
Thanks for your reply. Where can I download the JetSD module?

Samba + Solaris 7 and Solaris 8 I would like to upgrade the Samba installations at home and at work.
(I use my home network as a kind of "test network" for things I
deploy at work.) At home I'm running Solaris 7 and at work, Solaris

turns out), the one and only respondent suggested sticking with Samba

Solaris 10 live upgrade from Solaris 8 Hi All,
I am having problems upgrading the Solaris 8 to Solaris 10 on both of my

Invoking Solaris 8 executables on Solaris 9 platform Hi,
Recently we have migrated from Solaris 8 to Solaris 9. On Solaris
8, we were using gcc (version 2.95.3 20010315) compiler to compile some
of our C modules. As a part of migration to Solaris 9, we directly
copied the executables from Solaris 8 to Solaris 9 and tried to bring
up and everything worked fine. But, I read in the SUN web site
(http://sunfreeware.com) that the suggested gcc compiler on Solaris 9
is gcc-3.4.2. Since the executables on Solaris 8 are working fine on
Solaris 9, I am wondering if I need to download gcc-3.4.2 compiler from
SUN web site and compile on Solaris 9 p...
Cross Compiler for Solaris 10 x86 on Solaris 8 Sparc. All,
Is there a Cross Compiler available for Solaris 10 (v20z platform) on
Solaris 8 (sparc). We have our source code control system on Solaris 8
and every time we have to make a Solaris10 x86 binary we need to
transfer the code to the x86 host and do a native compilation. So is
there a cross compiler running on Sparc Solaris 8 system available that
can produce an x86 binary. I am not sure if this is a very good
question. Please excuse my ignorance.

Bug: Hard link in perl 5.8.6 under Solaris 8? I have an interesting problem. I have a file and directory which exist
on the same device but are pointed to by symlinks from another device.
First the directory:

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root other 20 Mar 21 15:58
/var/opt/zip/Zantaz/spool -> /spool0/Zantaz-spool
I'll do a df to show the device it's pointing to:
$ df /var/opt/zip/Zantaz/spool

A Question About Serial Numbers I'm new to this whole serial number thing. There are 3 serial numbers
from the HP49G+ that I got.
On the Package: CNA42301...
On the Back of the Calculator: CNA42000...
Using the SERIAL Command: CN42400...
Can somebody tell me about all of these and what they mean?
> Can somebody tell me about all of these and what they mean?
The number on the package is there because many people were wanting a
way to see whther or not the calculator is one of the more recent
versions. Earlier models were not as good and had some keyboard
problems. Newer models are...

Just a guess. Perhaps the extra letter is to allow for
distinguishing among different manufacturing sources within the
same country. For example, more than one factory, or even more
than one production line, within the same country, producing the

Serial Number Site I followed an old link to the serial number repository for C= machines,
but it came up not found... is it still around? If not... any
interest in reviving it? I have a server and a site I just started

Just curious .. wanted to finally add mine into there. :)
Also, I received a C= from eBay today with a strange cartridge. It is
an unmarked cartridge, with a C= serial cable coming out of it, and
also a red wire that goes to a small PCB. I will try and take a pic of
it tonight so I can show it. I have no idea what it is ...
Auditing on Solaris 8 Hello,
How do you turn on auditing on a Solaris 8 system? This needs to be
done without any GUI tools and at startup. Where is this audit log
stored? Last question, what is the difference between SAR (system
accounting package) and audit (auditd, bsmconv) system?
Thank you in advance for any information.

Solaris 8 SCSA Anyone know when this exam will stop being offered ? I passed the first
part a couple of years ago, and have only just got round to finding the
time to study for the second exam. I'm now looking to take it in a
month or so, but am just worried with Solaris 10 being around, that the
SCSA 8 exam will stop being offered and I'll have wasted all that time
I can't find a date, other to say that its still there for the moment.
Call prometric and see if they have a anything on record. I can
confirm, though, that you must take two exams for the same Solaris

DNS problem on Solaris 8 Hello,
I recently purchased a Workstation with Solaris 8. I wish to connect it to
Internet but I have a problem. I use a modem to connect my machine to my ISP
(CompuServe) as any PC (that I have too). I reached to make the connection,
all is fine but it seems that I can not arrive to resolve the DNS. I have
access to my mail using Netscape mail. And I can access a Web site with its
"numeric" address. But it was as if the DNSs (the IP addresses are good) do
not want to answer to "my" requests to any names out of the "compuserve.com"
I tried to modifiy some...
