formatting a blank DVD on Solaris 10 (x86)

  • Follow

Hi there.

Subject line says it all really.

I've put a blank DVD in the DVD+/RW recorder, I have some vid clips (mpeg
etc) that I wish to copy.

The Gnome Media Format tool pops up.

No matter what formatting type, file system type etc that I set,
after a couple of mins the progress bar is still at 0% and going nowhere
fast. :-(

I have tried this with two different brands of DVD.

Any feedback to what I am doing wrong (or if the recorder might be having
problems) would really help me a lot, as the man pages + Net searches for
Solaris 10 docs has been useless. :-(

TIA

If that's so, why would you format a black DVD?

To write something onto it ??

So I am still asking, 2 different brands of DVD put into the
recorder, the Gnome Media format box pops up without prompting.
Setting the options does nothing. Solaris 10 does not see the
DVD as a usable media (in the "This Computer" folder etc) .

How do I change the DVD into something that can be written onto ??

Skip format, it's not needed/doable. Use cdrecord to write.

All right. "blank"

WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO "FORMAT" a blank DVD?

The general procedure, as I understand it, for burning a CD or DVD
is something like "mkisofs" to build the image of the file system on
magnetic disk. You then burn the image to the CD or DVD.

I've never needed to do it and don't have a DVD-R drive installed to
experiment with so take my words with a grain or two of salt.
