Gnome Games
Hi,
I have gnome 2.0 installed on a Sunbalde 2000. Some of the gnome
games work fine but others don't seem to display their graphics. I get
no errors or anything. Like if I try and play glines, all I get is a
gey screen for the game along with the menus, no game playing grid or
graphics. Anyone any idea why this might be ?
Thanxs,
Phil

The Gnome coders, like most of the PC-unix world assumes that the
default Visual is 24-bit. Sun along with some of the other traditional
unix vendors start up their X servers with 24-bit visuals available,
but have an 8-bit visual as the "default" visual.
The solution is to startup your X server with a default of
24-bit. Your desktop will probably look alot better too for it. I
don't know why Sun doesn't do this as the default on machines that
have frame-buffers that are at least 24-bit (most modern Sun WKS?)
since its a losing battle it seems to make the PC unix coders put in the
small bit of code needed to scan through the visuals, find the 24-bit
one they want to use, and use it.
Add on the config options "defdepth 24 defclass TrueColor" to the line
starting up the X server in /etc/dt/config/Xservers. If you don't have
one already, cp /usr/dt/config/Xservers /etc/dt/config/Xservers and
edit it from the /etc location.
