install PKG package without pkgadd

  • Follow

Hi,

On a old station LX with Solaris 2.51 SUNOS 4.1.3, I must install some
packages like "HP Jetdirect Install" but there is no "pkgadd" on this
machine. I ftp's the package SOLe118.PKG.
My question: is it possible to view/ extract the files within the .PKG
file and install the files manualy?
Second: how can I install the package "pkgadd" for best facilities??

Thank for your help

Sure, just find a machine with pkgtrans, use it to extract the archive,
and then follow the instructions (location of the files, permissions,
owner, group) in the pkginfo (hope I am not mistaking the file name) file
at the root of the directory where the package was unpacked. Also check
for files like install/postinst or such, the use of which is pretty
intuitive.

This doesn't make sense. It's either Solaris 2.5.1 (SunOS 5.5.1) or
it's SunOS 4.1.3

It sounds like you're running 4.1.3, then. 4.1.3 did not include pkgadd
(and the rest of the package management stuff as it is part of Solaris
2).

You'll need to get the *correct* version of Jetdirect for the OS
you're running; simply getting a Solaris 2 (SunOS 5) package, splitting
it apart and putting the files in approximately the right places on a
Solaris 1 (SunOS 4) system is 100% guaranteed not to work.

Find out what OS you're really running and download the appropriate
package, which should come with instructions for *that OS*.
