I am new to setting up a jet direct printer on solaris.  I have
visited hp's website only to find this "sparcstation" only software.
I have an E10K domain and I'm trying to print to an hp8000 printer.

I have set it up using the lpadmin, and have successfully ran:

echo "test" |lpr -p hp8000

and it printed a little cover sheet, page 2 it printed the word
'test'..

sounds great..

if i try to:

lpr -p hp8000 output.file

then it just prints the cover sheet.. and nothing else.

i have been reading about the hp jet direct stuff, but it seems like
it's outdated or not supported for solaris 8.. 

any help?

Then download the Jetdirect software, install it, and use it to
set up the printer queue.  The software doesn't know (or care)
the difference between a sparcstation and an E10K domain.  They
are both Solaris sparc environments.
