NIS login problem

  • Follow

As far as I can tell, I've set NIS up correctly. The problem I'm
having is that I can't login to the network from the NIS client. I
checked that all the correct daemons are running on both the client
and master servers, I copied nsswitch.nis to nsswitch.conf, the user
account is defined on the NIS master but not on the client and yet I
get the message "login incorrect." I've tested other Solaris network
utitlities like NFS and automounter and those work fine. Any help on
this would be greatly appreciated. I should mention that there is no
Linux involved in my issue.

Is the way the password is hashed compatible with the client? Maybe the
client's logging something.

Cheers,

Does "getent passwd" deliver you all the users in your NIS database?
getent uses the definition in nsswitch.conf.

"ypcat passwd" directly uses the NIS map to query

Thanks for responding but could you elaborate on the use of getent. Is
this a command?

Ahem. A certain facility with a shell, how to get help on a UNIX
system, and how to intelligently ask questions in technical news groups
is expected. Otherwise people will think you're a total n00b who's
trying to install Solaris on their billyware box, student trying to get
someone else to do their homework or a billyware fanboi attempting to
troll. So far, you don't seem at all like a troll, just someone in over
their head.

In your case, the Sun man pages will help:

man getent

or the SUN documentation site:

http://onesearch.sun.com/search/docs/index.jsp?col=docs_en&locale=en&qt=g
etent

Best to pick up some books on how to use UNIX systems. I like the
O'Reilley books:

http://www.ora.com/

but YMMV.
