i just got a dell optiplex 740. if the ethernet driver is on the OS at
all i can't find it. ifconfig -a shows only the lo interface.
i read somewhere that it was a broadcom BCM5754 ethernet. it said to
download the drivers. i did. but the driver was an i386 driver, and
it wouldn't load. i tend to think that what i read wasn't right.
(BRCMbcme vers 10.0.3)
the BRCMbnx package doesn't have a driver in it, really.
i've tried ifconfig bge0, bge, bcme, bcme0.... and no go.
i've never had trouble like this before.
clue me in?

THANKS. that did it.
however.... after a bit of thought, i have some more questions.
1. the first time i tried to install this, the installation asked
me for the ip, domainname, name server, all the usual stuff.
in all of my subsequent attempts it has NOT asked those.
any idea what gives?
2. is there a way to add the package to the installation DVD?
obviously, that means copying the DVD to someplace writable
and making a new DVD. i think i can do that. but just because
the package is there doesn't mean the installation will find it.
you wouldn't happen to know that?
