Hi All,
I have problem installing solaris 8(64 bit)kernel on my sparc station
5 ( 90MHz processor with 256MB RAM) box. It is installing 32bit
kernel. Can anybody suggest me why this is happening even after giving
a couple of attempts.
Is there any restriction on operating system supporting (32bit /
64bit) depending on the type of hardware used.
TIA

A sparc station 5 can not run in 64 bits. An Ultra 5 should be able to
run in 64 bits.

The SS5, being a sun4m machine, can't run a 64-bit kernel.

Yep. SPARC-V9 (e.g., UltraSPARC) processors are required to
run a 64-bit kernel. Note, however, that it is possible to
develop 64-bit applications on a 32-bit kernel - you just
can't test them.
