Problems installing Solaris to SunFire V40z

  • Follow

Hello!

I need some help: I have a SunFire V40z with LSI Raid configured.
The two HDDs are combined to a mirror to have a fault-safe system.

I booted XP and it can see the mirror (with optional LSI driver).
I bootet Linux, loaded the LSI kernel module and it sees the mirror.

I booted Solaris 9 (HW 10/04) and Solaris 10 (actual download release)
and it cannot see the disk(s). When I try to install Solaris, I only get
the DVD-drive as drive for target selection. The RAID is not recognized.

What's wrong here? Please help?

With regards,

Peter.

According to my info you need Solaris 9 9/04 or later.
There is no Solaris 9 10/04.

If you want mirroring with Solaris there is also a built in volume
manager that can do this for you.

Yes, that's correct. I just looked after my media kit and S9 09/04
is the latest edition.

That's right, but why use a slower software solution, if the hardware
raid is integrated in the machine...? :-(

This is a common misconception. Software mirroring is
usually faster in Solaris.

However due to the problem of booting from a different drive
in x86 land, Sun recommends hardware mirroring of the boot-disks.
(In its internal standard Solaris guide lines.)

My V20z is away at the moment but it should be documented somewhere.
