qfe0 disconnect affecting qfe1-3

  • Follow

We have a quad NIC in a Netra. It's been up forever, but I needed to
disconnect qfe0 cable to be used on another host. When I pulled the
cable on qfe0, connection was lost on qfe1. After reboot, qfe1 was ok
again. Never seen this before. Can someone hint on what could have
happened? I almost got in big trouble since this was a prod host.
Thanks. Ron W.

No idea what happened. What I don't understand is why you didn't have
spare cables on hand!

Dodgy cable on qfe1? The slightest movement might have disturbed it. I'd
be very surprised if it where software related. It might be that your
qfe card had a problem though.

I would suspect that the QFE card might need to be reseated. I'd
suggest, at the first available opportunity that:
1. You reseat the QFE card.
2. You test the cable if you have a tester! I'm talking about an
Ethernet cable tester; some shops are fortunate enough to have them.
3. Replace the cable if it fails testing or if you are unable to test it.

While you are re-seating the QFE card you might want to vacuum out the
dust bunnies.

What's the IP configuration? How did you measure connection loss? Did
the port not ping, or did you verify that link was down?

If they're both on the same subnet, and you're not using IPMP, I'd
expect you to lose ping (but not link).

ifconfig showed the interface as UP, but I couldn't ping it from
outside host. (the link on the switch was good as well). The way I
noticed it down is via the fact that my telnet session (spare me the
ssh speech) dropped when I pulled the cable from qfe0 and my telnet
was on subnet on qfe1. Note, both qfe0 and qfe1 were on completely
separate VLANs so I'm still at lost why this happened. I'll try to
play with it off hours. Both cables are good since the server is up
and running. I suspect the driver gets confused and blows out other
connects on the quad.
