question on ultra 2 memory

  • Follow

this is what I have in my Ultra 2:

# ./memconf
hostname: epoch13-sna
Sun Ultra 2 UPA/SBus (2 X UltraSPARC-II 296MHz)
socket U0501 has a 64MB DIMM
socket U0401 has a 64MB DIMM
socket U0701 has a 64MB DIMM
socket U0601 has a 64MB DIMM
socket U0502 has a 32MB DIMM
socket U0402 has a 32MB DIMM
socket U0702 has a 32MB DIMM
socket U0602 has a 32MB DIMM
socket U0503 has a 32MB DIMM
socket U0403 has a 32MB DIMM
socket U0703 has a 32MB DIMM
socket U0603 has a 32MB DIMM
empty sockets: U0504 U0404 U0704 U0604
total memory = 512MB

I want to upgrade to 1GB of RAM on this old hooch. Can I order
4 128MB DIMMS and roll with it?

I'm guessing Sun doesn't manufacture RAM for the Ultra2 anymore
since it's not on store.sun.com. Anyone know of a good vendor
to use?

Should not be a problem to upgrade, I can by your old ones :))

SUN usually by the memory from Crucial, www.crucial.com which is owned
by Micron which make the chips. Very good memory modules!

Ouch !

You can get sun barcoded memory for much cheaper on ebay.
Note that many Ultras (but not all) use the same memory and 128Mb DIMMs
are often more expensive than 2x64Mb DIMMs.

:)) Yes, but this memory is brand new.

Probably the cheapest is to by a machine off EBAY and scrap it!

When the cost is 4x what you can get used, not really much of an
advantage.

You might be right. Last Thursday I bought a dual 167MHZ Ultra2
with 512mb for around $70.00. I do not know what the DIMM sizes are though
and they are most likely not 128mb DIMM's. When, (and if) the machines arrives,
I expect to see something along the lines of what your machine in the 32/64mb
range for the DIMM's.
