### S10: A4 and "Letter" paper sizes and foomatic PPD's

• Email
• Follow

Hi,

I have Realised that the foomatic PPDs under

/usr/lib/lp/model/ppd/system/foomatic

All have their defaults set to "Letter" size paper.
In Europe we have A4- size paper in our printers.
Should'nt the "Solaris Print Manager" Give the option to
change tihs to A4.
Or should we have two sets of foomatic PPDs with different
Default setup - A4 or Letter.

Printmanger copies the PPDs to /etc/lp/ppd and uncompresses them.
Is there a way to change the default Paper size in a PPD file

*DefaultPageSize: Letter
*DefaultPageRegion: Letter
*DefaultImageableArea: Letter
*DefaultPaperDimension: Letter

To A4 short of hand-editing the file ????

Regards Lars

MIkTex Letter Paper Setting
Hi Everyone: I have been struggling to set the Miktex to US letterpaper setting. It seems MikTex's defaults are a4, but I want letter paper to be the default. I went through the miktex.org page's manual. I changed/added files as per the instructions and then updated the file database. No effect. It is all the same. Can anyone give me some tips as to what might be happening? How to fix this? (By the way, I also have Cygwin installed on my PC, but as far as I can tell, it is not interfering wtih my miktex.) how to keep letter paper appearance?
OK gang, I am sure this topic has been covered before, so I apologize in advance for requesting a duplication of effort. I am generating nice lab reports using the labbook class. My figures come from MATLAB via LaPRINT, so they are eps files imbedded in a TeX file that I \input. I need to go through the dvips step to get my figures to look right AFAIK. I don't know how to go straight to pdf without messing up the figures. If there is an option please tell me. I am not very interested in pre-converting the figures to pdf, but if I must, sigh... What my problem is, I declare letterp...

Printing man pages to a HPLJ5 and letter paper
I print man pages to a locally networked HPLJ5 here, and it works _except_ that when it prints it comes up wanting A4 paper and what we have in the bin is letter. I do a: man -t <foo> | lpr and the printer just sits there waiting for A4. I can manually override each page, but this is getting to be a drag and I'd like to know where to make a change so such output will come out on letter paper. PDF995
I am trying to produce a 2xA5 booklet from an A5 portrait format Word document using PDF995 If I set the tray selection to Auto-select, the output comes out as 2xA6 on A5 and not 2xA5 on A4. OK, I can enlarge the result when printing, but that shouldn't be necessary, and it will be tiresome for the user of a published document. If I set the tray selection to, say, Multipurpose tray, the output is 2-up on US Letter, despite setting all the defaults I can see to A4 in the ppd file. And, if I try to print an existing PDF fro Adobe Reader to convert it to 2-up format, it just seems to repro...

Letter counts
Hello List! I've a question (surprise)..Is it somehow possible to let Tex count how many (text) characters I've got in a section? Yes you guessed it, I got an assignment to write some little essays with ~2600 characters per section. 'wc' on command line does not work since it counts all the tex command as well. 'detex' does also not function well, since it first counts spaces as well, but more important it counts the words/lines/chars of the whole document. But I would need to know per section. I'm relatively new to LaTex, but somehow I feel there has to be...

Letter Recognition Question
Hi. I am working on a project that requires extracting characters from a picture. My intuition tells me that I should use neural nets for this task, but before I invest too much time in coding such a neural net, I want to get some idea of how successful this technique would be. Should I use neural networks? Is there some technique that is more accurate? I am looking for some model that will turn a collection of boolean variables (a black-and-white bitmap) into a character, with very high accuracy. I have a question for people who are knowledgeable in the area of character recognition usi...

letters & formatting
i've two questions would you use FM for letter writing ? I can see advantages - merge fields - handy storage of correspondence - filing of correspondence - links to other aspects of job or project Do you put the letter body into a field of its own ? In which case how big should that field be if you don't know how long the letter will be ? It's easy to see how FM helps with form letters but not so easy when its applied to ordinary correspondence. Am I missing something ? What about formatting ? I have a problem getting the line-space to distribute line space evenly. Any thoug...

A Form Letter with Access
I have a database...flat as it is...a database no less. I would like it to create form letter (actually they are contracts) but the idea is the same. I would like to use a report or a form to automatically look up a client and then go to the report/form and have the documents automaticall created. I know I can do a mail merge in Word with access as the data but I was thinking Access would allow me to do it a bit slicker. I have a number of contracts and not all are applicable to each client. Could Access be made to also automatically generate and save a file (contract) for recal later? Ti...
