serial terminal replacement

  • Follow

hello,

first of all: yes I know this is not the best newsgroup to post
this but I couldn't find any better at first sight and I know that
many people reading this newsgroup at least know what a
serial terminal ( dec VT, wyse, qume,.. ) is.

I am looking for a replacement of a serial terminal that are nowadays
rare and most of second hand material doesn't last longer than a few
years.

I wonder if a box exists where you can connect a PC screen and a PC
keyboard
and transforms this to a serial interface. A PC with a terminal
emulation program
is not an option. Does such a box exist?

Thanks for all replies or google keywords that lead to the solution,
tried a lot
but no result.

Is a console server appliance (many support SSH nowadays) or something
like conserver (http://www.conserver.com/) out from your POV?

It's definitely no simple "PC with terminal emulation", but frankly even
that seems practical compared to going back to real ttys. Is there a
reason why you want to do so except nostalgia?

If you give your motivation, helping you is easier...

The terminal to be replaced is connected to a unix server This terminal
is at a counter of
a place where hearing aids are tested. The reason why a PC or portable
with terminal
emulation can't be used is noise.

Ahh, so no disks or fans?

What you need is what used to be called an "X Terminal" and is these
days called a "thin client". These are the modern day equivalent of
a dumb terminal.

Given that this is a Solaris group, have a look at this;

http://blogs.zdnet.com/askbloggie/?p=27

(It's a review of the SunRay for those who don't want to look.)

You do need a network connection to your Unix host instead of
a serial one.

You can still buy new VT510 terminals!

Hi,
You could use the serial port on the Sun Ray 2 and run a terminal
emulator in CAM mode.
Install Solaris 10 on a cheap PC the install SRS 4.1 and attach the Sun Ray.
Quick and easy.

Sun Ray's are silent :-)

Cheers
Richard.
