Solaris 10 desktop terminal emulation options ?

  • Follow

I'm looking at Solaris 10 (on x86, with a PC keyboard) to see if it offers
anything for me over Linux.

I need to use it on the desktop in an environment with VMS systems and with
emacs configured locally for DEC's EDT keypad emulation, so a high quality
terminal emulator is vital.

On Linux, I use xterm with a keyboard mapping file for local sessions and
use PuTTY for connections to VMS systems.

What are other people here using to connect to VMS systems from a Solaris
desktop ? Are any of you using EDT keypad mode when editing locally ?

I was hoping that dtterm would offer a better emulation environment than
PuTTY/xterm, but I can't even find any way to configure it's keyboard
emulation. Is one expected to use a resource file (as in xterm) or are
there other options that I am missing ?

[I'm aware of the terminal emulators built into Gnome/KDE, but they have
always proved to be useless for this use.]

Thanks for any information,

Simon.

I use Windows and Reflection X Suite (formerly from WR&Q but now, I
believe, from Attach Mate). The PC keypad is a key short of being able
to do a proper DEC keypad emulation unless you can find a (rare) LK-250
or LK-450 keyboard.

I'm trying to reduce my use of Windows, not increase it, :-) but thanks
for the pointer.

[BTW, as regards the PC keypad, it is rather fortunate that the missing key
is delete word, as I never use that key...]

Does anyone else know if there other terminal emulation options available
within Solaris 10 that I have not mentioned, or have you suggestions for
configuring the dtterm keyboard emulation ?

Thanks for any information,

Simon.

Can't you use /usr/openwin/bin/xterm? Its available on our Solaris 10
systems.

for dtterm - there are manpages and resources,
but they don't cover the whole program.

regarding xterm -
Some people use a script (with resource file), as noted

http://invisible-island.net/xterm/xterm.faq.html#how2_fkeys

but xterm already does send all of the proper strings (just not where your
fingers may expect).

I use xterm at the moment on Linux. The problem is while it's VT display
emulation is good, it's VT keyboard layout and user interface is not ideal.

It is looking like xterm at the moment though.

Thanks to everyone who posted for their responses.

Simon.

Or if it is loaded, /opt/sfw/bin/xterm, which I think is a much newer
version.
