Solaris 10 MANPATH

  • Follow

I just installed a package on one of my Sol10 (X/86, if it makes any
difference) and it reports "This system has no global MANPATH".

Is that a Sol10 change? And if so, how does one add a global MANPATH?

I would define it in the /etc/profile file. MANPATH=/path/to/manpages.
This will set it globally on the system.

No, Solaris just doesn't have a way to set a global manpath (which is
a bug but one which has existed for quite some time)

Thanks. Not an error I've seen before, despite using Solaris since before
it was called Solaris...

And Solaris 10 has manuals in so many more places than any previoous

Incarnation so its a problem to find them all.

  So far I have found:

  /usr/share/man
  /usr/dt/man
  /usr/openwin/man
  /usr/X/man
  /opt/SUNWspro/man
  /opt/sfw/man
  /usr/sfw/man
  /usr/apache/man
  /usr/apache2/man
  /usr/j2se/man
  /usr/perl5/man

Well, if you set the environment variable in /etc/profile you're all
done with a global manpath. Personally I really don't consider this a
bug but a good feature since it gives many advantages.

For example; users who are not into webserver management really have no
need for 'apropos' responses which concern Apache (/usr/apache/man) so
those manpages are not included in my global manpath. These adminss have
this manpath portion included in their personal profiles.

Granted; it takes a little more effort to setup, but it also offers a
lot more flexibility.
