Solaris 10 on an Intel machine - 32bit or 64bit

  • Follow

Hi friends,
I installed Solaris 10 on an Intel machine, i was
succesfully able to install it.
Now my next task was to install Oracle 10 G on the same machine. I
downloaded Oracle 10 G ( 10201_database_solx86_64) from Oracle website.
I went through the document for installing oracle 10G
on Solaris. I run the command # /bin/isainfo -kv on solaris machine I
get the output as 32 bit i386 kernel modules.

As per the Oracle Document the output should be 64-bit amd64 kernel
modules.

I tried searching for Oracle to install on Solaris for the intel
platform which supports 32bit operating system. but was unable to find
it .

can you suggest be the link where I can get Oracle for 32 bit Solaris
on Intel platform.

Or is that I have to install oracle 9i or any other version ????

Some others here can possibly suggest how to get a 64-bit kernel on
x86_64. But you can go for Oracle 10.1 for 32-bit x86 Solaris 10, like
I did.

It is on the same download page at Oracle. Just download 10g Release 1.
http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/database/oracle10g/index.html

10gR2 hasn't been yet released on 32 bit x86. According to Metalink:

Availability: 1H CY2006 (hahaha)
Planned for: August 2006 (hahaha)

This Metalink page will get updated monthly. I started monitoring it in end
2005:
Planned for: December 2005
Planned for: February 2006
Planned for: April 2006
Planned for: May 2006
Planned for: June 2006
Planned for: July 2006
Planned for: August 2006

Expect the page to change again around September ~10th.

Frankly, I don't think they will give priority on IA32 for Solaris.
Linux is where the action is on IA32.

Oracle hasn't shipped 32-bit Oracle 10gR2 (10.2.x.x) for Solaris
x86/x64 and my guess is that they never will.

Either upgrade your processor to a 64-bit capable one or download
Oracle 10gR1 (10.1.x.x).

Oracle 10.1.x runs fine on Solaris 10.
You must give runInstaller the -ignoreSysPrereqs option.

To get 64-bit kernel on x86, you need a CPU that supports either AMD64
or Intel EM64T instructions.
