I am using Solaris 10 on an Ultra 60.
My printer is an HP DeskJet 870Cse.
I used the following commands to configure the printer for postscript:
# lpadmin -x hpdj870c_ps
# lpadmin -p hpdj870c_ps \
-n /etc/lp/model/ppd/system/foomatic/HP/HP-DeskJet_870C-hpijs.ppd.gz \
-m standard_foomatic -T PS -I postscript -o banner=never -v /dev/ecpp0
# enable hpdj870c_ps
# accept hpdj870c_ps
However when I use the Launch-Preferences-System Preferences - Add/Remove
Printer; the printer comes up but if I click on it it gives me an error:
"this queue; ppdcache file missing"
I also can't get the ppd checkbox to work if I add a new printer.
Is there a package I can reload to get this info back? Or is there some
other way to get the ppd to work?
Thanks in advance,
Gary.

You shouldn't need to configure the printer via the JDS tools to print
from your applications (StarOffice, Firefox, etc) once you've created
it via the command line.
Is some application not able to print that's causing you to try that
route?
Can you duplicate the bug with the latest Solaris Express?

John,
I can print StarOffice just fine from the print menu but am having trouble
with both firefox and mozilla.
They just print a little in color then start printing garbage.
I am trying to print yahoo.com home page.
I've tried the Postscript Viewer in solaris 10 and sometimes it prints just
fine after a reboot and sometimes it prints garbage.
Can't figure it out.
I probably did do something wrong earlier:
I did gzip -d on /etc/lp...../HP/HP-DeskJet_870C-hpijs.ppd.gz and had to use
gzip to put it back to a gz file.
Dumb I know! I'm wondering if that's the problem.
I'm using the firefox and mozilla that came with the Solaris 10 8/07 build
so I don't think that they are the problem?
Thanks in advance,
Gary.

Run the following and then try again:
# lpadmin -p hpdj870c_ps -o stty="-opost"

No, that just made it worse. The printer goes on forever!
Thanks anyway, it was worth a try.

No, it prints on four pages with a bunch of giberish in between. StarOffice
still prints without a hitch and in color though. Don't know what else to
say.
Thanks,
Gary.

Well, I got it to work for 1 printing only.
After that I have to do a /etc/halt and a boot -r to get it going again. I
also recycle the printer.
Then it works just fine, once.
Is this the bug that John was talking about?
Is there a patch for this?
I couldn't find one on sun.
Gary.

Since power cycling the printer clears the problem, you've found an
Hewlett Packard, not a Sun bug.
However, I have another suggestion:
# mkdir -p /etc/opt/lp/model/ppd/system/foomatic/HP/
# /usr/sfw/bin/wget \
-O/etc/opt/lp/model/ppd/system/foomatic/HP/HP-DeskJet_870C-hpijs.ppd \
"http://openprinting.org/ppd-o-matic.cgi?driver=hpijs&printer=HP-DeskJet_870C&show=0"
# lpadmin -x hpdj870c_ps
# lpadmin -p hpdj870c_ps \
-n /etc/opt/lp/model/ppd/system/foomatic/HP/HP-DeskJet_870C-hpijs.ppd \

# lpadmin -p hpdj870c_ps -o stty="-opost"
# enable hpdj870c_ps

$ lp -d hpdj870c_ps /usr/sfw/share/ghostscript/8.15/examples/colorcir.ps

Well John, it worked once after a reboot but then I couldn't duplicate it.
Thanks for the help and I'll keep trying. That is the only time I was able
to print out the colorcir.ps complete without any spaces of giberish.
On the right track but not there yet.
I think like you said it is a bug in my printer.
Can't afford a new one so I guess I'll live with it.
I can however get my hands on HP722Cse which is I think an older model.
Do you think it is worth a try.....what with the price of new ink?
Thanks for all the help.

Couldn't get the 722C because my brother threw away the power adapter.
However I did transfer the colorcir.ps file to my laptop (HP pavillion
running windows ME)
I put the ps file into Corel Draw and it printed just fine.
If it was a printer bug wouldn't it show up on the laptop also?
Well at least I know how to print ps files now I can just transfer them via
ftp to my laptop and print them.
Still don't get Solaris 10 and the Ultra 60 though?
Gary.
