Solaris 9 or Solaris 10 for newbie? Soon I'll be receiving my first Sun workstation (W2100z) with Solaris 9
and Java Desktop 2 preinstalled.
As a user fairly new to Solaris - I've been using Linux as main OS since
last August, Windows for years prior to that - would I be best off
utilizing the preinstalled Solaris 9 or installing Solaris 10? I've
been leaning towards Solaris 10 and just wanted some 'professional'
inputs on the idea.
My primary goal is learning Solaris and I won't mind reinstalling
Solaris 10 later in the year when all the other features are fully
integrated [ZFS, Janus, etc.]. I'v...
Samba + Solaris 7 and Solaris 8 I would like to upgrade the Samba installations at home and at work.
(I use my home network as a kind of "test network" for things I
deploy at work.) At home I'm running Solaris 7 and at work, Solaris
8. /etc/passwd auth at home, NIS+ at work. Have a WinXP desktop
and the work laptop at home, a mix of Win98, WinNT, Win2k and WinXP
boxen at work.
Last time I asked a question about Samba+Solaris (over a year ago, it
turns out), the one and only respondent suggested sticking with Samba
2.2.8a, as 3.0.01 RC wasn't quite ready on Solaris yet. I note that
3.0.10 and 2.2.12 are...

Open source may help out a little bit, but analysts say one thing

Solaris 10 live upgrade from Solaris 8 Hi All,
I am having problems upgrading the Solaris 8 to Solaris 10 on both of my
servers: Sunblade 2000 and Sunfire v440.
Both upgrades are failing the same way:
After successful upgrade at the reboot to Solaris 10 BE the
network/inetd-upgrade service fails to start and after this service all
other dependent services fail: services... telnet, ftp... X...
If I disable the network/inetd-update and reboot the system(s) it is the

jumpstart Solaris 10 on Solaris 9 server I just built a jumpstart server on a Solaris 9 sun box and have had no
problems jumpstarting other sol9 boxes using the custom rules. I've
also copied a Solaris 10 image onto that same solaris 9 server and
have had problems loading Solaris 10. These boxes will go directly to
the manual network configuration and never check/find a rules.ok
Do I need a Solaris 10 jumpstart server to be serving out Solaris 10?
Any tips? Thanks.

Solaris Volume Manager in Solaris 10 miniroot Has Solaris Volume Manager (SVM) support been added to the miniroot in
Solaris 10 i.e. when I boot off the Solaris 10 media can I get access
to my metadevices?
Currently when I boot off the media, modinfo reports no md modules but
I see /etc/lvm/md*.cf links to /tmp/root/etc/lvm/md.cf which makes me
believe that I may have access to the metadevices if I copy the correct
files from the internal disks. Am I missing something really stupid?
If it SVM is NOT available, how would I add it?

upgrade my Ultra 30 from Solaris 9 to Solaris 10 Good morning group,
When trying to upgrade my Ultra 30 from Solaris 9 to Solaris 10,
everything works great using default settings until I get to the window
"Testing the upgrade profile, please wait ..."
the progress bar reaches 100% everytime, but afterwards, another window
pops up and says:
"Auto layout for Disk Space Reallocation failed. Please see the Solaris
Installation Documentation for more upgrade options."
Any advice on what the above is really asking for? Is there a system
that I can check to see where it's failing?

Oracle slow on Solaris. Fault of Solaris or of Oracle queries? Hi all,
I have an question question about Oracle on Solaris.
Sorry if the question is half and half related to this newsgroup
but I'm looking for sysadmin point of view.
I've noticed Oracle gets quite slow when some stored procedures are
launched. Now from the point of view of sysadmin, what parameters do I
to make sure the problem is Memory/bound or CPU/bound rather than

Invoking Solaris 8 executables on Solaris 9 platform Hi,
Recently we have migrated from Solaris 8 to Solaris 9. On Solaris
8, we were using gcc (version 2.95.3 20010315) compiler to compile some
of our C modules. As a part of migration to Solaris 9, we directly
copied the executables from Solaris 8 to Solaris 9 and tried to bring
up and everything worked fine. But, I read in the SUN web site
(http://sunfreeware.com) that the suggested gcc compiler on Solaris 9
is gcc-3.4.2. Since the executables on Solaris 8 are working fine on
Solaris 9, I am wondering if I need to download gcc-3.4.2 compiler from
SUN web site and compile on Solaris 9 p...
soft patition problem Solaris disk suite Solaris 8
I am facing a problem on my v 440 box running Solaris 8.
One of the soft partitions has gone bad and is in maintaince state. It
asks for invoking metareplace d15 d16 < new device >. However I only
see soft errors in the corresponding disk ( iostat -En ).
Is there any way, I can get that soft partition back. If I use the
metarecover command, it will be for all the soft partitions including
which are not in errored state.
Which patch cluster: Solaris 9 or Solaris 9 Sun Alert ???? At http://sunsolve.sun.com/pub-cgi/show.pl?target=patches/patch-access
there are two patch clusters for Solaris 9 (SPARC)
1) Solaris 9 Sun Alert Patch Cluster (127.6M)
NAME: Solaris 9 Sun Alert Patch Cluster
2) Solaris 9 (133.5M)
NAME: Solaris 9 Recommended Patch Cluster
Reading the README's for these I can't work out what is the difference
between them. I've not checked each patch individually to see what is
the latest, but why are there two copies?
I must be missing something here.

Cross Compiler for Solaris 10 x86 on Solaris 8 Sparc. All,
Is there a Cross Compiler available for Solaris 10 (v20z platform) on
Solaris 8 (sparc). We have our source code control system on Solaris 8
and every time we have to make a Solaris10 x86 binary we need to
transfer the code to the x86 host and do a native compilation. So is
there a cross compiler running on Sparc Solaris 8 system available that
can produce an x86 binary. I am not sure if this is a very good
question. Please excuse my ignorance.

Gcc On Solaris Sparc Versus Solaris Intel: Repost With Error Information Included Gentle People?
I am currently running gcc 3.1 on both my Ultra 5
Solaris 8 Sparc machine and on Solaris 8 Intel machine.
The C source code that compiles and executes perfectly on
the Ultra 5 will not compile on the Intel machine!
The compilation errors, shown below, seem to relate to
syntax errors, and not simply missing files. Remember this
same code compiles perfectly on the Sparc machine. There is no
inline assembly language or obvious machine dependent code
Why would there be such a difference in the between gcc on
Sparc versus Intel?
Someone mentioned that...
Flex and Solaris I'm using flex (2.5.4) and bison (1.35) on Solaris 8, but I have to use the
Sun Workshop 6 update 2 due to some other products we are using, which won't
compile with GNU compilers. The problem is, I can't seem to get the
yyFlexLexer class to compile. It gives me a bunch of errors that maybe
possible to solve if I edit the FlexLexer.h file, but I would rather not
mess with the provided header files. Is there a solution? Maybe a compiler
option I'm missing?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Maybe. What platform and what release are you talking about? And
are you talking about connections -to- the device itself, or
connections that the device is mediating?

Solaris help I am a newbie to linux and Solaris and Our high school has just added a

Both systems are getting ip's dished out by a linksys router.
What is the best way to run these two systems together? I would like for my

Solaris Traiing Good day all:
I'm looking for some web based training or a good reference book for
Solaris8/9 to catch up on admin issues. I was an admin on Apollo systems 15

command prompt . None the less, I need a quick infusion of knowledge but
alas I do not have an unlimited budget (to attend a boot camp).
