SparcBook1 and adapter cable to SCSI

  • Follow

Hi
I have an old working Sparcbook1. In the manual, it shows
using an adapter to connect the parallel port to a 50 pin SCSI.
I was wondering if anyone knows if this was a passive wire
adapter or an active adapter?
I've found a diagram for a wire adapter but I'm not sure it
would work.
Thanks
Dwight

Hi Dwight,

Can you post a link to the diagram?

Mark.

Hi
Here is a wire adapter with no active parts:

If the pinout is the same as this diagram then you should be able to
get a cable off ebay. I would have thought it unlikely that anything
but a straight cable as you've found would be required. Having said
that, the SPARCbook 3 provides power over the HDI30 to HD50 cable for
the external floppy drive, so it would pay to be a little careful. I
guess the best answer would be to get hold of the manual and check the
pinouts match with the cable you're suggesting.

The SPARCbook 3 accepts a 'standard' Apple MAC targeted SCSI cable.

Regards, Mark.

Hi
The manual just says I should get an adapter from my local Sparcbook
supplier.
It does say that the end devise should supply termination power so my
guess
is that it is just passive wires. They have one picture ( not photo )
showing
it and it looks like a typical wire adapter but might have a chip or
two inside.
The port on the Sparcbook1 is just a parallel printer port and not
some
other spacial port. The Sparcbook3 was a more traditional Sun box than
either the 1 or 2.

Hi
Doing more investigation, this adapter will not work on a printer
port ( may even damage it ).
It looks like the only thing that would work is an active adapter,
like the Trantor T348 or T358.
These are currently available as APA348/358.
Now the question is, did the Tadpole Sparcbook1 use the Trantor
adapter?

Hi
I finally got the right combination. I needed the T338 adapter.
The T348 didn't work. I connected it up to a Sun 411 and
was able to mount the CROM :)
