Sun Fire 280R doesn't boot from S10 DVD

  • Follow

Hello.

I'd like to (re-)install Solaris 10 8/07 on a Sun Fire 280R
system. But for some reason, the system doesn't seem to boot
from the DVD...

I inserted the DVD in the DVD reader (it's a DVD reader - it's
printed on the front of it). Then I went to OBP and did:

,----[ output on console ]
| {0} ok boot cdrom
| Resetting ...
| RSC Alert: Host System has Reset
|
|
|
| Sun Fire 280R (2 X UltraSPARC-III+) , No Keyboard
| Copyright 1998-2003 Sun Microsystems, Inc. All rights reserved.
| OpenBoot 4.10.11, 4096 MB memory installed, Serial #51565316.
| Ethernet address 0:3:ba:12:d3:4, Host ID: 8312d304.
|
|
|
| Rebooting with command: boot cdrom
| Boot device: /pci@8,700000/scsi@6/disk@6,0:f File and args:
`----

The system does not have a monitor and also no keyboard.
I'm accessing the system via RSC via network.

I'm trying to boot from a self burned DVD. The md5sum of
the .iso file I downloaded from Sun.com is correct:

d08f24ff68976ec4fc3584092c6259bb sol-10-u4-ga-sparc-dvd.iso

That's also what's listed on <http://sdlc-esd.sun.com/ESD35/solaris10-u4/md5sum_sparc.list?AuthParam=1199793646_5693de466d0afc3bee78ebb87da0a8c2&TUrl=an1npDpbKod7kSYrROhENTonIeU1W0D1Lc4nXz+pGFFranixdCdgxDTPbW4=&TicketId=dVJ+NwFMNes6/w==&GroupName=SDLC&BHost=sdlc2g.sun.com&FilePath=/ESD35/solaris10-u4/md5sum_sparc.list&File=md5sum_sparc.list>.

Any ideas, about why the system hangs at that step? And what can be
done about it?

Thanks a lot,
Michael

Some CD/DVD drives do not work well with home made CD/DVD media!

If all else fails, order a media kit from Sun. It's either $40 US or
free depending on the policy of the week! If that's not an option, try
burning a new disk at the slowest possible speed!

What's printed? On mine I see: DVD rom. Its made by Sun.
Are you using a Sun DVD "reader"?

Hmm I have: OBP 4.16.4

This part looks correct so it looks like a Sun DVD rom so far

I will add that self burned non RW CD's always work for me.
Even on something like an SS20. Can we still get CD images online??
I hope so.
Self made DVD's on older Sun machines?
Never gotten them to work no matter how "good" the manufacturer's
reputation +_ type you name it. Same as above.
But the Sun made ones work..

I've had this problem on a couple of older DVD drives. I seem to have
better luck on the older Sun drives using DVD-R media and avoiding DVD
+R. Newer drives will read either format with no problems.

Yep. I did this (that's why I wrote the md5sum of "my" sol...iso
file).

I'll try that.
