Any idea what software-only support will cost for sparc/solaris?

For one workstation? (blade100)

Thanks,

David

They don't currently offer it.

How about an arm and a leg! Oracle purchased Sun a while ago. Neither
company has a history of giving away support. They charge for it and
they charge all the traffic will bear!

If you have a modest level of experience and don't need instant, or
nearly instant, solutions you probably don't need support or can get
along with "24 hour response"

If you are out on the "bleeding edge" and need 99% up time you should
seriously consider paying for support.

If you are still running Solaris 8 or 9 you can't get support from
Sun/Oracle but you probably don't need it. If you were going to
encounter a bug you would have encountered it by now.

The last dollar figure I recall for support from Sun was $240 per month
for the lowest level of support (24 hour response). If you want faster
response, you pay more. That figure of $240 was published here about
two years ago. It is probably more now. If you need and exact figure
Call Oracle and ask for a quote!

For really big bucks you can get a resident engineer, software or
hardware! And I do mean REALLY BIG BUCKS; you are paying both the man's
salary and Oracle's overhead and profit!

<snipped>

actually Sun gave away quite a bit of support b/c of "entitlement"
that any savvy user could manipulate at will. Granted it was not an
"official" giveaway, but a giveaway all the same. Oracle has clamped
down greatly, that is true. They were very upfront about all the $$
they planned to wring out, and they have kept their word.

OK -- now, how about getting patches, "security and recommended", updates to solaris-10,
getting solaris-11 whenever it comes out -- that kind of thing.

What are they charging for THAT?

And, for those who refuse to pay whatever it is,
how will you get patches ("security and recommended"), etc?

Thanks!

David

8% of the original workstation hardware price, per year, but there's some
additional one-off cost to get systems back on to support if they fall off
support, and I don't know what that is.

I see you can get the newest solaris for just $20 (media kit).

Now, what about patches, especially what Sun called
   "security and recommended" bundle?

It's now past the 10th, so there should be SOME interaction
between people here and Oracle. Are *those* patches going
to be free, as before?

If not, any idea how much?

Thanks!

David

Doesn't look like it according to this page:

http://www.oracle.com/us/support/systems/operating-systems/index.html

"If you are running Oracle Solaris, Oracle Linux, Oracle VM or any
combination of these products on your Oracle Sun system and you have
opted not to purchase complete system coverage, this is the service
offering for you. "

Notice the chart says:

"Access critical security patches and bug fixes"

>

that same page has a form you can send for a quote.
