svc:/system/device/fc-fabric:default
Is this device required when using SCSI hard drives?
Whenever I disable the service, Solaris 10 boots into Maintenance Mode
with the following output from svcs -vx:
svc:/system/device/fc-fabric:default (Solaris FC fabric device
configuration.)
State: disabled since Fri Dec 22 18:13:08 2006
Reason: Disabled by an administrator.
See: http://sun.com/msg/SMF-8000-05
See: man -M /usr/share/man -s 1M cfgadm_fp
Impact: 15 dependent services are not running:
svc:/milestone/devices:default
svc:/milestone/single-user:default
svc:/milestone/sysconfig:default
svc:/system/utmp:default
svc:/system/console-login:default
svc:/milestone/multi-user:default
svc:/milestone/multi-user-server:default
svc:/system/system-log:default
svc:/system/sac:default
svc:/system/filesystem/local:default
svc:/system/dumpadm:default
svc:/system/fmd:default
svc:/system/cron:default
svc:/network/initial:default
svc:/network/service:default
Basically, I want to remove all packages that aren't required for the
system and I can't see how Fiber device is required for Solaris 10 x86
Desktop PC.

It possibly should not be; file a bug.

I hope you've read infodoc 86177 -- it points out that you must not
remove things that are in SUNWCmreq and that the recommended procedure
is to install one of the supported metaclusters and then add packages
to that, rather than removing packages.
There are also important patching considerations here.

Whats the prefered method for filing bugs to Sun?

I'm not a registered SunSolve user so I can't view that document. By
metacluster, if you mean installing a pre-defined environment (such as
the Reduced Networking Group) then even that has unnecessary devices
installed with many I've already stripped away.

I'm new to Solaris so I have no idea how to even patch the system - or
where to get the patches from. :)

If you have suppport contract go to http://sunsolve.sun.com
and select 'Support Cases'.
If you don't have an support contract then go to http://bugs.opensolaris.org

Another poster answered this part.

Oh. In that case, you're likely to be off in uncharted and
unsupported territory. The problem is that dependencies between
software components can be _extremely_ subtle, and unless you're
intimate with the internal design of the component and able to test
all the combinations adequately, there's no way to guarantee that the
parts stripped away were purely unneeded.
For what it's worth, there's an internal metacluster (SUNWmreq) that
specifies the packages that must not be removed.
