Turn off telnet/ssh login message

  • Follow

Hi!

When I login to a Solaris 10 system with ssh or telnet, I get
the following message shown:

Sun Microsystems Inc. SunOS 5.10 Generic January 2005

Copyright 2006 Sun Microsystems, Inc. 4150 Network Circle, Santa
Clara, California, 95054, U.S.A. All rights reserved.

This product includes software subject to the license and legal
notice contained herein and which may be found at
/opt/legal/License and /opt/legal/Legal_Notice.

What do I have to tweak to turn off this message?

Thanks,
Alexander Skwar

There are two possibilities:-

Create a .hushlogin file in your home directory, this may well
    stop the output.

If the above doesn't work then you'll have to edit the applicable
shell startup script in /etc, this will differ according to what
    shell you're using.

take a look at /etc/motd and /etc/issue (for ssh).
set banner in sshd_config

That's odd.

What's in /etc/motd and /etc/issue? Has someone modified /etc/profile
or /etc/.login on this system?

Have a look in /etc/default/telnetd.

Dunno about ssh, though.

vi /etc/motd /etc/issue

I haven't seen the second bit of the message before.

In /etc/motd, there's the message I pasted. Thanks!

No. Default Solaris 10 stuff.

/etc/motd was the file. Thanks for your help!

It's what "you" (as in Sun) ship ;)

Its probably pulling multiple files; probably /etc/motd and also double
check /etc/issue. I can't remember where it is but there is also a
directory where it will cat whatever file you put there.

I'm not sure which ssh you're using (sun or open) but for my openssh
sshd_config file the "Banner" directive sets the login message.
