Hello,
We have collisions on a network interfaces on solaris 9 (bge and eri). I
presume the network cards by default are "auto negociating" but they are
connected to a rather old Intel 10/100 Hub and there might be some problems
auto-negociating.
I will try to force the interface duplex and speed to 100 Full Duplex on the
solaris side with ndd.
I'm wondering if it is only a metter off issuing the ndd -set commands or do
I have to take the network card up dnas down ?
How do I reset the NIC without rebooting ?
Thanks

Is ifconfig bge0 down + ifconfig bge0 up enough ?

I use ndd in interactive mode when i need to do this, with no need to
reboot..

After reading the man page, I see that ndd is OK, it actually turn the
interface on and off.
That did not fix my problem.
I have an V240 (bge 1Gb interface) and an 280R (eri) in the DMZ. The are
plugged into an old Intel 330T stackable HUB. This hub does NOT support full
duplex, that's why my network interfaces are operating in 100 mbs, Half
duplex. That would be OK with me, but I have a lot of errors and collisions
on both server when I copy files accross the network.
We will replace the hub for a switch but we don't have one yet.

that doesn't do any good at all.
Ifconfig basically controls the mapping of the IP space to an
interface. The interface is "alive" and at a particular duplex before
and without ifconfig. Note that you can 'snoop' on an interface that
isn't up.
You just need to follow the steps in the FAQ, including saving the
'autoneg_cap' setting for last. When that one is done, it resets the
interface.

Well, on half-duplex, colisions are normal. What are not normal are
"late" collisions. What sort of errors are you seeing?

You can always just ifconfig the interface down /up (provided you are
connected to either the console or a Terminal Server). Note that both
the duplex settings on your network equipment and your server should
match to avoid FCS errors.

Mark

The ndd commands by themselves will work, the connection will "drop" whilst
the switch and the card re-establish a connection
