Hi,
I have a laptop (Thinkpad T41) with a UK keyboard running the x86
version of Solaris 10. I also have an external USB Type 7 Unix
Keyboard. Although the keyboard is from a UK localization pack its
layout is US due to it being the Unix version (I am told the UK Type 7
PC Keyboard has a UK layout).
Anyway I am used to looking down at the keyboard when typing certain
symbols (I use a PC UK keyboard at work, and a UK Apple Keyboard at
home).
This is my problem, I normally look down at the keyboard for @ , " and
=A3 signs as on a PC UK keyboard the first two are switched over when
compared to a US keyboard, on an apple mac the first two (@ and ") and
the same as on a US keyboard, but with a =A3 sign over the number 3 (#
is not on the keyboard at all, you hit Alt-3 to get it.)
This means that the Type 7 keyboard is almost identical to the Mac UK
keyboard. Only shift 3 is different (=A3 on one # on the other)
(I wish Sun wouldn't refer to the UK localization pack as a UK rather
than a US localization pack, but to be fair the power cables in the
pack are English)
Anyway the question is can I either, set up the two keyboards, UK
laptop and Unix Type 7 to have different layouts. Or failing that can
I switch layouts quickly in JDS without editing xorg.conf?
I did try adding the keyboard indicator applet to a panel but received
a warning that it will soon be removed from Solaris and I shouldn't
use it.
Incidentally how can I get a =A3 sign on a US keyboard, or will I have
to use program like character map to insert it?
I am considering replacing the UK keyboard on the laptop with a US
one, but don't really want to spend money on an aging laptop.
Thanks
Alex

maybe not elegant but certainly quick:
xmodmap <filename>
where filename is one of /usr/share/xmodmap/xmodmap.*-usb
