V240 Sun ALOM problem

  • Follow

Sunsolve search is down :-( I checked the internet and ALOM is probably too
new to get something interesting.

Hi,

We have recently installed a new V240 server. We configured the ALOM on it,
and for some reason, the alom alerts are not correctly sent. We also have an
Sun Fire 280R with an RSC card, and with the same setup (except the IP
adress of the management card) all the alerts are coming through.

We suspected a network problem, but the 280R is on the same internal network
and it works fine. We suspected the alom 1.0 firmware and installed alom
1.2, same result.

We snooped the network between the alom interface and the smtp server and
used the scadm send_event command and discovered that there is some SMTP
protocol error:

In the MAIL FROM: header, we have the host name of the alom, but NO domain
name !

This seems to fool the SMTP server and mail alerts do not get through.

What is strange is that nowhere in the alom config is there a way to put
some domain name. The alom card/subsystem is pretty basic.

And if we look at the RSC card config on the 280R, there is no domain name
parameter either. Somehow, when we do receive mail alerts from the 280R's
RSC, we do have a correct domain name in the "from" field. Where does the
RSC card get it ? From the host's O/S ?

Another funny thing:

When we use scadm send_event on the V240, alerts are logged on the console
and /var/adm/messages. On the 280R, alerts are NOT logged on the console,
nor on the /var/adm/messages log. How do I configure this ?

Thanks a lot.

Hy,

I read in the release notes that in some case you can expect Transmission
error on this can of server
3/1000 of the server that have not be checked.

May be you get one of them.
Did you try to reconfigure properly your card
from Solaris prompt enter
#.
then enter scsetup or setup.

Yes the card is configured properly and I can telnet into the ALOM without
problem. There is a protocol error at the SMTP level. The SMTP server
expecta domain name in the FROM part of the header and ALOM only returns
it's hiostname, without the @domain

Problem is, nowhere in the scsetup is there a way to set up a domain name !

The ALOM card does not have access to the DNS server as well, so it cannot
determine it's default domain name from there either.
